    Checking timing

I want to check my timing on my 2001 21V. It has the 350 MPI Mag engine. I think I need to disconnect a wire or ground a wire off the distributor but don't know which wire I need to do that with. I found a connector on the port side by the valve cover that has a white jumper wire connecting the two pins, if I disconnect that wire the engine runs real rough then stalls out unless I rev it up a little (maybe 1200 rpm's or so) but never settles in to a consistent rpm. Is this the correct wire to disconnect? If it is the correct wire do I need to try to hold it at 1200 rpm to check/set timing?

With the engine running normal it was set 6* advanced, if that helps any?

    Thanks!

Thanks lohe, I was reading through that tread. Is the only way to set timing with a scan tool or diagnostic tool?
