Correct steering cable for 2001 21V?

I'm ordering a steering cable for my 2001 2100v Ltd. (21V). It has the Teleflex rack and pinion under the wheel and exits starboard side. I just want to make sure I'm getting the right cable and length. I know there has been a lot of discussions on this but it seems like it goes back and forth on which one to get.

Is the SSC134XX the correct one to get?

First should I get a 17' or an 18'? It looks like stock is 17' but some use an 18' to run it above the tank.

Has any one used this Teleflex cable SSC15418 tfXtreme? It is suppose to be a replacement for to the SSC13418 that's more durable.

    Thanks,
    Brad

I have a 2002 21v and replaced mine a few years ago. I had the same debate as you and ended up getting the longer one to not come up short. The extra foot caused a few extra slight bends from point a to b. This was enough to make it feel like an old cable even though it was brand new. I swapped it for the shorter one and ran it over the tank. It worked perfectly.

Unfortunately I don't remember the 2 sizes I debated between. I know I ended up with the shorter of the 2 and 17' really rings a bell.

Any one know about the Extreme Teleflex cable, are they actually any better?

I think that it is only 20 bucks more. Right? From what I have been told it doesnt do anything different in regards to corrosion.

Just ordered up the SSC15417 extreme cable. I paid $136 shipped. I'll let you know how the install goes this weekend.

Replaced the cable last weekend. What a night and day difference, its like a whole new boat. Here is some of my words of advise on the 21V with the rack steering:

Get the 17' cable, the 18' would of had a ton of slop in it.
I ran mine over the tank and it was a pain to do it since I couldn't use the old cable to pull the new one through.
Make sure you have a 1 1/8" wrench. I used a cresent wrench and it took forever to remove and tighten the nut.

Other then that it was a real simple job.

Thanks for the info OU! I have an 01 21v myself and the steering has been pretty tight all year. I just order the same SSC15417 cable for $140 shipped and hope to change it out next week. I bought the boat last summer from the original owner and the steering has always been stiff in my opinion. Hope this makes a big difference.

I just went through this whole thing right before summer. I ended up going with a uflex M66 17ft. It was less than $100. Works great bolted right in to my mores 290!!!

Replaced my cable on my 2002 2100v today, used the 17' extreme cable and ran it over the tank. The old cable would not pull out from under the tank until I cut the 1-1/8" nut off using bolt cutters. The new cable is super smooth, like it's not even connected to the rudder.
