Low pressure fuel pump not working

Ok, I try my boat out today and it runs great for about 2 minutes, then begins to sputter... then dead. Troubleshooting later, I get down to the fact that the high pressure fuel pump will pump, but the in-tank pump is not (if I unhook the supply hose to the HP pump, nothing comes out). I didn't have my electrical stuff with me and am going to be checking power to the pump but my guess is there is no power.

Assuming no power to in-tank pump, what causes will I be lookking at?

Is it possible that I could have an in-tank pump issue?

I had a similar problem. I changed my fuel pump then it still did it. Would run great with fake a lake. Had two mechanics look at it one the dealer one a buddy. Then come to find out there was a in-line fuel filter. I changed that and I was golden. I thought that the only fuel filter was the fuel water separator.

It is a z1. Maybe you're right and there is no in-tank pump? how does the gas get all the way to the fuel pump on the motor which is much higher?

There is no in tank pump but an inline pump that provides suction from the tank to the pump, filter, injectors etc... start by checking the anti-siphon fitting on the fuel tank. To do so: go to the hardware store and purchase a 1/4"npt X 3/8" barb brass fitting. Gain access to the fuel pickup line on the fuel tank, remove the feed hose and then remove the barb from the pickup tube. Replace the barb (this is where the check valve is located) with the fitting you just purchased and reconnect the fuel line and then run the boat. If everything runs okay, replace the anti-siphon valve with an aluminum unit (long term dissimilar metal contact with fluid passing through it will cause corrosion between brass and aluminum). If it still does the same thing, move on to the fuel filtration system and then the fuel pump. The fuel pump has a mechanical test port on the fuel rail that looks like a bike tire fitting. If your anti-siphon is bad, the fuel pump cannot pull enough fuel to make pressure in the rail and therefor will not show pressure at the test fitting. This may lead you to conclude it's a bad fuel pump because of the symptoms but start with the anti-siphon and then go from there.
If you can though, get a fuel pressure gauge hooked up to the rail in order to determine if it's a fuel problem at all. Keep us posted.

What year Z1. What motor? You do have 2 fuel pumps a low pressure and high pressure but neither is in the tank. Let me know exactly what yr and engine you have.

Ok I just saw in another post you have an 09 wich means PCM. The low pressure fuel pump is located at the bottom of the housing that contains the fuel filter and high pressure pump. Check it for power and ground. I have seen a few failures of this pump and it always seems to be after sitting for awhile. My bet is you have a bad low pressure fuel pump. Good luck.

Thanks a ton guys. At least now I'm on the right track. I had myself completely backwards. I'm going to start with the engine and work my way backwards to the tank.

- in my search though, I think I have come across or created another problem. All of a sudden I'm getting no ignition power. My battery is good, connections are good, dash comes on and shows zero voltage. Where is the ignition fuze?

Don't forget to check the checkvalve in the tank. I had a similar issue that looked like a fuel pump but after replacing the check valve all symptoms disappeared.

Is the check valve you refer to the same as the anti-siphon valve that others have mentioned? I ordered one of those just in case that's what it is. I am going to be working on the boat tonight or tomorrow night and will let you know how it goes.

Must be. I'm not that technical but there is a 90 degree connector coming out of the tank. In there was a check valve that was sticking which I believe may be officially called an anti-siphon valve.

Gents, thanks for your help. It turns out it was the low pressure fuel pump. Once I actually found it, I tested the harness, we had power to it but it wasn't working. In the process I also discovered the fuel filter up there was nasty as heck too. Both should be here tomorrow and I'll be back in business!

Apparently those pumps aren't so common. I searched up and down and finally found that skidim.com had one in stock.

Do you have a link to the pump? I can't find it on skidim. I have been having vapor lock problems and wonder if that is the cause.

Mine has a fitting on the bottom for the hose but since the part number's the same I assume I can remove it from my current pump and screw it into the new one. Will let you know once I get it installed.
