High pressure fuel pump on '04 24V?

Headed out Sunday only to return to the dock at idle, sputtering. Boat ran above idle for about five minutes, then started cutting out. I can smell fuel so I beleive fuel pressure is okay and it is bad gas. Gas had just been pumped to gas cans and taken to the boat that morning.

This got me looking rather closely at the fuel intake system though. There is NO fuel filter before the fuel pump at the bottom of the block, and what I thought was a water seperator is not. This object is placed in the fuel intake line after the aforementioned fuel pump, is large, has one fuel line coming in and two headed out (I think) to the top of the engine. It also has an electrical connector at the top. No drainage port or filter so no way it is a seperator (learned my lesson about assuming). I looked in the engine manual and saw that the 335hp Vortec lists a fuel pressure of >30psi!

So my question is: Is this large device a high pressure fuel pump? Also, do most boats come with no filter and/or water seperator? I am planning on intalling those today, after I drain as much of the gas out as I can.

PS Thanks for the help and taking the time to read this.

    Sincerely,
    Al

the large device you are talking about is a water/fuel filter and high pressure pump, all in 1 convinient package. the bottom half spins off using a strap wrench. the smaller item you mentioned is the low pressure pump. check that both the wires are securely attatched to the bottom of it. i hope you have not installed the other filters yet? that could cause too much strain on the fuel pumps and cause more problems. did you happen to ask you dealer about this stuff before coming here?

The problem turned out to be from bad gas, and moss stuck in the pick up screen inside the tank (most likely from a gas can with the bad gas). Moral of the story is to make sure you know what is being poured into your tank!

I did add a fuel filter, sounds like I should remove it. There is no documentation about the fuel pump/filter, How often should the filter be changed?

      Thanks for your help!

I change mine everytime I change my oil and oil filter. Even though this is probably too often, I have never had a fuel related problem. I have never had a fuel problem but I have heard of horror stories from some guys who mainly buy their fuel from marinas and it having a lot of water in it.
