    whining in reverse

I have a 2005 21I (which I absolutely love). From day one, it whines when put in reverse. Is this normal? It does not bother me - just wondering.

Every direct drive I've ever been in for the last 20 years does it. They have all had the velvet drive in them also. I'm not 100% on what the new ones have in them, but i'm sure it's a velvet drive (no reason to fix what ain't broke). Thats just the way they are. I'm not exactly sure why, but it is normal.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

the reverse works through planetary gears while forward is hydraulic clutches. the sound is normal.

        THANKS DOC

Now when my friends ask me about it I can sound smart.

          Whining

Great info. Thanks guys! I told my son it does that to notify those in the water that I am backing up. Kinda like the alarm on big trucks. He went for that.

I have a 2005 24V and have the same sound. I agree that the sound is a good indication of being in reverse. Maybe it wasn't an intentional thing but I like it.
