    Leaking gas from vent

Whenever I fill up on a hot day, I hear a lot of gurgling coming from the fuel vent. Usually this results in fuel spilling out of the vent, even when the tank is only half full.

I have checked the vent line and it does have what appears to be a check valve. However, the vent line runs up the corner of the engine compartment and then over to the vent, I would think that the vent line should follow the fill tubing.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I have an '02 23V and noticed the last couple of times out I had the same problem. I was a little confused about it but nothing really seemed wrong. Then as I hit the water yesterday I noticed the boat was not runnig right. It was surging and sputtering. I figured maybe there was water in the fuel, did not have any HEET, so I thought maybe it would clear by running it a little more. Then about 2 miles from the dock it died. I could not get it started back up and so I lifted the engine compartment lid and noticed a very strong gas odor. I reach down and felt the fuel/water seperator to find a hole had rusted through it. It appears the engine was sucking air through the hole in the filter. Replaced it in about an hour on the water and it ran fine the rest of the day. I have not yet filled back up but will be curious to see if the gas leaking through the vent hole stops. May have just been a coinsedence, but I would at least check your filter. I am carrying a spare from now on, and changing it yearly, as this is the second time I have had one go out (the other was on my previous Malibu). No point in wating time on the water for a $10 part that is so easy to change.

I have my changed every year when I get it winterized.

I will inspect it closely this weekend, but I don't smell any gas in the bilge so I'm not sure we have the same problem, but will check just to make sure. Thanks for the help.
