Boat dies when put in gear???

Hey guys, I need help!! Last weekend my boat died on me while engaging the v-drive??? It starts fine, idles fine, but when I put it into gear to take off, the engine revs up and down a couple of times and stalls. A few times it just stalled immediately.

I have an older Tige, 1996 22' v-drive with the 7.4l 454 MPI Magnium. It has only 250 hours. It has a fresh tank of 91 octane, new fuel/water filter, spark plugs, cap, rotor, coil, wires, oil+filter, starter, and charged batteries. The boat is really nice and runs fantastic. This problem just started.

So Ive been hearing about a shift interupter switch?? Does anyone know if my boat has this? Where is it?

Any one else experience something like this??

    What could cause this???

    Thank you in advance...

Symptoms are similar to the experience of wrapping a line around your prop shaft. I would check to make sure you don't have anything that is restricting the prop shaft rotation.

Great news!!! Problem solved and the old boat runs again!!!

It turns out there are two things I read about online and looked into, the TPS and the IAC valve. The TPS (throttle positioning sensor) actually had a vacuum line that was almost completely fallen off. All I did was push it back on. Clearly this was the cause why the sensor was not activating properly.

Next I removed the IAC (idle air control) valve and gave it a good cleaning with some carb cleaner.

Since I fine tuned both of these components prior to testing, I may never know which the culprit was, however when hooked up the water, fired it up, and placed the boat into gear, it performed flawlessly!!!

If anyone ever experiences something like this (on an older boat???), hopefully these two items may be a starting point…

      Happy boating!
