    water pump replacement

I just was told that the seal in my water pump may be going bad and the pump could need to be replaced.

In my 21i the access to the jabsco pump is about as good as it gets, but is this a repair I should dare try on my own?

Also, is there any way to check or replace the seal instead of just buying a very expensive pump?

What motor are you using? I can say that swapping out the engine circulation pump on my 98 2200V is pretty simple. A direct drive should be childs play. Also, my pump was "only" $140 or so from a local boat shop. I think they are about 25% or more less online

Not the impeller housing, but the circulation pump, right?

Closed or open/raw water cooling? Is it a trickle or a piss?

Motor is the Marine Power 350. Raw water cooling.

I'm now a little confused about the impeller housing/circulation pump, is it not all one piece? I was under the impression that the "pump" included everything from the cover you remove to access the impeller, all the way down to the shaft.

There is no visible leak. The mechanic suggested the problem with the seal as a result of the pump not pulling water and heating up even though we checked for debris and back flushed and found nothing. Once the engine cooled down, he fired it up and the pump would start to heat up for maybe 10 seconds before it started pulling water and cooled down.

I was going to start a new thread, but I guess resurrecting this one will be just as good.

I put the boat away last season and now am starting to get it ready again. I pulled the pump out (Jabsco 50414-8) and I can see that the seal is a bit deteriorated, there is a little rust, and it looked like a gasket toward the pulley side of the pump had come out of place.

I am having a heck of a time finding one online. After extensive googleing I've got one dealer on ebay from Washington state and somebody else in Australia, and both are selling the same used pump. I looked into this last year and got a price quote of $600, so I thought rebuild. If it's only going to cost around $140, that's great news.

So, where can I get one? I'm in the LA area, but am happy to order online or call up a shop and have them mail it. Any recommendations?

Hey Trojan, here's some info to help you: the seal your mechanic is talking about is always the first to go on those pumps then water weeps into the bearing and the unit eventually blows up. Replace it with a Johnson number 10-24228-1 or Sierra number 18-3586, both carried at west marine or available online for about $150 new. Keep the old unit for spare if you happen to need it. Good luck.

Thanks. I'll grab one at West Marine. Just curious, is the original Jabsco pump not made anymore?

It is still made, just more difficult to come across at local stores, they usually stock jabsco impellers but no always the pumps.
