    Leaking Taps Ram

    Hi i have a 2000 21i tige over here in Australia.
    The taps switch works,the taps pump winds over but the plate on back of the boat doesnt move up or down. One of the rams has a leak (little) and needing to know if this is a hard fix or can someone talk me through the repair on here please. The pump has enough fliud in it. Also should the taps gauge needle move up and down with the plate on the trailer when we get the taps to move and not leak?

    A little leak shouldn't stop the TAPS plate from moving properly. Mine wasn't moving and I did some research on this site and found the telephone number for the company that makes the TAPS. Then I called and spoke with a tech, he explained the system will work even when it is low on fluid. He advised that I run a positive and negative line directly from the battery and test the system by connecting it to the TAPS wires (can't remember the sequence they are connected, like blue and green to hot.. to go up, and yellow and green to hot.. to go down).

    If that works then the pump is ok. Of course if your leak is that bad then you may need a seal kit, which they probably sell as well..search TAPS and you should find more info.

    Mine initially was moving very slow then quit completely, so I too thought it was the pump or lack of fluid. I filled it up with ATF (needed about a pint to bring it to the full mark) but that didn't make any difference. After calling the company and testing, then I cleaned all the electrical connections and rewired it... and it works great now.

    It will only move about 3 inches, and "Up" is the higher #s (6,7,8,) on the TAPS guage, "down" is the lower #s (1,2,3..). The therory is that "down" causes the boat to plane more quickly by pushing the nose of the boat down creating less wake. "Up" allows the boat's rear to sink deeper in the water, thus allowing the boat's unique rear hull to generate larger wakes. You can find more info on this on the Tige.com website.

      I did fill it up to the right level with fluid and it did move down but it seems to be stuck now. What to do now as it is anoyoing me greatly. what sort of seals are there in the ram etc?

        Try redoing the electrical connections by taking them apart, cut them, restrip, and reconnect, it did mine a world of good. One of my cyclinders actually leaked a little after the refill but no probelms from it. I really think it may all be in the connections..it was for me anyway and I had a very similar problem as yours.

        It works as it is suppossed to now, up or down in about 10 seconds, it had taken about 30 seconds to go down and it would not go up after that.

          Does it stop when it is all the way down and up or does the trim motor pump keep running?I am over here in australia so i cant ring the taps people up like u said u did lol, it would cost me heaps over the phone. Did u redo the switch inside the throttle arm as well or just the electrical connectors on the pump. After u did all that to yours and after the plate was stuck down like mine is ,did yours come up on its own with the motor pumping or did u have to have a mate give the plate a push. And if u move your plate on the trailer does u taps gauge needle move as the plate moves? (does it have auto stop or does it just keep pumping if u hold your thumb on the up/down button) Did u fix the one ram on yours and if so what did you do?

            The plate will stop moving but the pump will keep pumping, but you can hear it straining. I just redid the electrical connections at the pump. It comes up on it's own, and it did it when I tested it with leads directly from the battery as well.

            Do the test with the direct leads first; disconnect the connections from the pump and have a wire coming from the battery (both positive and negative side),and connect the wires to the pump wires. You can do this from the back of the boat and observe what the plate does.

            As I recall there are three wires coming off the pump and one is a ground the other two are for the up and down movement , depending on how you join them to the hot off the battery.
