    Propshaft Noise??

I have recently purchased a 1995 Tige 2002 FSLM with 140hrs, my first boat. After running the boat for about 6 hours I have a couple questions/problems.

    1. At about 3/4 to full throttle there is a whining/humming sound that appears to come from the driveline or prop shaft. The boat is direct drive and does not seem to shake or have any difficulty getting up to speed. Is this noise normal?

    2. The last time I took the boat out it stalled out when I cut the throttle to pick up a downed rider. At that point I had difficulty starting it back up. I opened the hatch and turned it over a few times to no avail. Finally the engine sort of back fired and then started right up. The boat operated fine for awhile, then, the same problem occurred again. If I throttled down very slowly the engine did not stall. What is the problem? Water in the fuel? Carburetor problem?

If anyone can give me any insight it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Ryan

I'm no expert but did you check the drive shaft fluid, and or the packing nut on the shaft. Hopefully Tige MD will be able to give you better ideas.

I'm not sure where to find the driveshaft fluid, but the tranmission fluid is fine. As for the packing nut on the shaft...I am not sure what to expect. No water or moisture comes through it, but it does not get hot or even warm to the touch after running the boat.

Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming.

That's what I ment was the Tranny, I was always told the nut should have a drip every few minutes or so.

Thanks BFRANK...my dad mentioned the same thing...maybe i will back it off a little bit and listen for a difference.

Does your boat make any kind of humming or whurling sound??

Bfrank is right. The packing nut should drip unless it has been changed out to the new system.
My tranny makes a whurling noise when I throw it in reverse but it does not make a noticable noise when going forward.
Your other problem definitely sounds like a fuel/carburetor problem. It may need a rebuild. Have you changed out the Fuel/water seperator filter? You might try that before taking it in to a mechanic.

                Thanks for the reply ghollow.

Since the problem occured I changed the fuel/water seperater, which had ample ampounts of water in it, but have yet to take the boat back out to test the results. I was considering pulling the fuel tank and draining it in order to start fresh so to speak. But, pulling the tank looked like alot of work so I figured I would hope for the best with the new fuel/water seperater.

rcparis555, welcome to the tige family.

the noise your hearing could be a number of things, examples being, shaft alignment, prop damage, bent strut, packing too tight, bent tracking fins. any of these can cause a noise at speed.
the stalling when chopping the throttle, what is your in gear idle rpm. should be around 750rpm. if it is lower than that, speed it up alittle. the 2 idle air mixture screws should be set at about 1 1/4 turns out, + or - 1/8 turn. do not turn the screws in too hard, just till they stop, if some one has torqued those screws in too hard the carb is trash. the first thing you need to do is clean that tank, what ever it takes, there is nothing worse than being stuck on the water with the kids screaming and the wife bitching just because you took a short cut

The noise rcparis555 is hearing - Could that be just the normal noise of the fins going through the water?

It may be normal to a Tige, though it's not normal to other boats (like I/O's). I know I questioned that sound to my dealer for a long time, until he came out to the water to hear it himself.

it could be, the older tiges do make some noises underway that no other boat makes. my brother had a 95' fslm and i could here that boat coming a mile away. kind of a howling noise. i always thought it was cool.

Thats it...the noise is most like a howling noise. I have been out on a few other direct drive tournament boats and had never heard any noise like this. When I get the RPMs up and start to gain some speed, a howling noise begins. I was afraid that it was due to some sort of friction in the drive line that was doing damage.
Should I still back off a little on the packing nut to allow a steady drip?

As for the staling. The idle was just a hair under 750rpm, and the screws were at about 1 1/2 turns. I pulled the tank last night, drained it, and am going to try and get it back together in time to test it out this afternoon up at silverwood. Hopefully that will do it.

I want to thank everyone who posted replies. This has been a great introduction to the Tige family and i really appreciate it.

                          "Howling" describes it well.

Mine does a howling when going straight and a roller coaster sound when making sharp turns.

My 2003 22v did it and my 2005 22v does it. You mention older Tiges doing it? Doesn't everyone else's Tige do it? Am I that lucky to have the "cool" sound in two boats in a row while others are quiet?

My dealer said - They all do it.

go for a ride in a 94'-95' tige 2000slm or 2002fslm and you think your tige's are whisper quiet

Well, I have changed the fuel/water seperater, drained/cleaned the fuel tank, and the air/idle screws are at slightly more than 1 1/4 out. At the lake yesterday the engine was still cutting out. Not so much when chopping the throttle, but after cutting the throttle then going back to the gas it would die out unless i really feathered the gas back and fourth. I think it is the carburetor, maybe the throttle pump?? I am thinking of just buying a rebuilt one, or having mine rebuilt.

Does this sound like carburation? Could it be anything else?
