Fuel gauge testing

I had the unpleasant surprise over Memorial Day weekend when I first pulled out the Tige to find that the fuel gauge was no longer working. Does anyone know if there is a quick test that one can do to determine whether it is the gauge, the sensor in the tank, or the lines between? I don't want to buy a new gauge only to find that that is not the problem.
