today one of my service writers told me about a phone call he took today. i hope the customer does not mind me telling the story, but i want y'all to read this. so next time you are pissed off that we are not being "johnny on the spot" for you it's because we are putting out other customers fires.
so, here's the $64 qusetion.
joe boat owner calls and says he has a beeping noise coming from his boat. he can not figure it out, all the gauges are normal and the engine runs perfect, it's a new boat and needless to say he is worried. service guy asked how loud is it and is it a constant tone or a steady beep... the owner says it is a steady beep, it is not as loud as the ignition alarm, not as loud as the depth alarm or the pp alarm, but he can only hear it while the boat is idling or with the engine shut off. can NOT hear it when the boat is at speed. any ideas on what it could be?
well, service guy does his best trouble shooting and even talked to some of my technicians to try and fix this problem. so, here we are 2 days before the holiday weekend, more work than we know what to do with and i have 4 of my best guys working with a guy over the phone (not too many shops would do that now would they?) trying to fix a boat from memory. did i mention the frustration the customer was having at this time. he was very nice but you can just tell from the sound in his voice. anyone have any ideas?
well, the customer ended up figuring it out himself. we were of no use to him 0, zip, nada. his son's beach towel was partially stuck under the engine hatch, when they lifted up the hatch to retrieve the towel the beep got louder upon further inspection joe boat owner found his wifes cell phone in the bilge with a voice mail alert beeping at him
so, moral of the story is next time you have to leave a message or voice mail at your local boat shop and they don't call back for a while take a deep breath, count to ten and think about the job us boat wrenches are doing this time of year.
i want to thank this certain "joe boater" for mainting his cool while we were trying to help him. it's not too often we see that anymore.
