    Installing new prop

    I received my new Acme prop for Christmas (Thanks Chptril) and need to know if there is anything special I need to know to install?

    How tight does the nut need to be? (should there be a gap between prop and nut).

    Read about grease being added to the shaft before reinstalling the new prop (what type of grease would work)?

    I don't think my original prop has ever been removed.
    Any info would be appreciated.

    Any marine grease, like you would use on wheel bearings.

    I dont think there should be a gap between the prop hub and nut.

    I'd say 30-35 lbft of torque should do it. The trick is to make sure the new prop is seated all the way up the taper once it's seated and the nut is snug. From there, the key keeps it from spinning and the ny-lock and cotter pin keep the nut from backing off.

    The c-clamp puller should be pre-lubed, but if not, some grease or anti-seize on the threads will aide in pulling the old prop off and reduce the chance of damaging the pullers threads.

      You may need to add some heat to expand the prop if the c clamp does not work. I went two different boat dealers, used thread penetration oil x3 over 4 days, used a pneumatic air hammer, finally took it to someone who had to heat up the prop. So be prepared for a fight.
      The worst day of boating is still the better than the best day of work......, unless you bend your prop.

        I marked the location of my prop with a fine sharpie, then made sure the new one was that far up. I used marine grease and a new nyloc nut. Not sure what the torque was but 30 or 40 ft lbs (as stated above) sounds about right.

          NO GREASE ON A TAPERED SHAFT!!!!

          do not grease it up, you want to use lapping grease to fit the tapper correctly. Most shops or people will not do this because it takes more time
