    IAC CLEANING & GASKET

Pulled off my IAC (idle air control valve) off my 2003 6.2L Mercruiser Black Scorpion to hopefully clean it and fix my idle problem. Idles really slow and dies when I move into forward/reverse.

In removing the IAC I have damaged the gasket . This gasket has mesh on it. There is no gasket in Australia.

My question is what is the role of the gasket mesh. Is it to filter or something else. I know its not ideal but I could make the gasket by cutting it out. However the mesh is a little tricky and I could just lay the mesh over the gasket if it is indeed required. Which side of the gasket would be best to lay the mesh (iac side or block side or doesn't matter).

I have read many posts re the IAC but not many mention this gasket.

    Thanks in advance guys.

Here is photo of gasket and mesh. I can probably clean off the gasket off the mesh and reuse the mesh.

Simple fix: buy a small sheet of thin gasket material, most any auto parts store should have some. Make 2 gaskets using the old as a template. Then cut a piece of metal window screen to match the gasket, then sandwitch the screen inbetween the 2 gaskets with a bead of Permitex Gasket maker.

Thanks CHPTHRIL. Thats what I'll do and hopefully by cleaning the IAC and replacing gasket it will fix my Idle problem. You can see how black the gauze was in places I haven't cleaned it yet. Was completely black when I first took it off

I believe that is a coast guard deal to control back fire, just like a flame arrestor, or merc maybe thought it would keep moirsture out.
