    Trailer brake issue?

    1. With no boat on the trailer and going over bumps, I would slow down. Once I slow down the brakes would lock up and thew trailer would bunny hop. If fact every time I braked the surge brakes would lock up. Only does it without the boat on the trailer.

    2. The actuator up on the hitch seems to move pretty freely forward and backward. When I stop with the boat on the trailer I would fell a big clunk. When I take off I would hear another big clunk. I am suspecting there may be an issue with the pivoting system in the ball hitch part of the trailer. Could it just be somew air in the lines? Brakes come on pretty quick when empty.
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

#1 - this is actually kinda normal. I would address #2 first.

#2 - Sounds like low fluid, worn out shoes, or shoes are out of adjustment. Now, low fluid can be caused by a leaking cylinder. If the cylinder leaks fluid on the shoes, it can lead to #1.

      Thanks for the input.

The fluid level was right up. I inspected the inside of the wheel area where the drum is and I didnt see any fluid, that whay I thopught maybe air but if that was the case the brakes really wouldn't apply when I strop right?

I am going to have to take the trailer. I really need peace of mind about the brakes.

Actually, #2 is normal as well after a few years. Not sure what can be done about it. Just make sure your ball is greased as well to allow it to move freely.

I'm not sure what coupler you have, but mine has a shock absober inside of it. If that is bad, then you'll have the problem you described.

Mine clunks all the time, my master cylinder is shot too so my brakes don't apply. I'm planning on replacing both parts in the next couple weeks.

FYI... My trailer is a Hensley w/ an FRP Trailer Buddy surge coupler.
