Need Help, (Matercraft Indmar 6.0L won't start) I know

My Brother n law has an x45 with 6.0 L. distribuless ignition. He was out the other day running great went to change riders and it would not start back up just crank.
I have checked the fuel filter (which is a pain in the a$$)in the tank. How do I go about checking spark? Do I need a special spark plug tester? I know it has to be something electrical. It doesn't even attempt to start.
Any help would be great. I created a login at Mymastercraft.com and only see one post reply not very helpful. At least hear I think you guys will help me get his boat back in the water. To get it look at by the marina in 10-12 days out. So I was trying to help him out.

    Thanks

That engine more then likely has what is called: Coil Near Plug ignition. Each cylinder will have it's own coil, mounted to the valve cover probably, then a short plug wire jumping from the coil to the plug. Checking spark with be pretty much the same as an other ignition system. Go get a spark tester from the auto parts store, its a spark plug looking thing that will plug into the plug wire and ground to the block. Pull the wire off the plug, plug up the tester (make sure you have a good ground) and then have an assistant crank the engine over. If no spark, it's more then likely a crankshaft sensor or ignition module, which may be part of the ECM.

Caution: DO NOT try to test spark with out the tester like using a screwdriver or just holding the wire close to a stud or something. These individual coils are not as robust as the old ones as they are designed to only fire 1/8 the number of times and will burn out if the spark can not go to ground.

Oh, also check the shifter and kill-switch. Dont know how Indmar/MC do it, but either of these could be wired to interrupt the ignition.

Thanks I think I will stop by and pick one up to test for spark. It does have the coil packs. I have checked the lanyard/kill switch but I have not checked to make sure voltage is passing. I will also confirm that.

      Thanks again for the info.
