No spark on 1998 22i. Already replaced distributor ignition sensor and coil

    Hi All,

Boat died when underway, no spark. Replaced ignition coil, and replaced the ignition sensor located inside the distributor. Still no spark. What's next? Boat turns over fine, just no spark....

Start simple, how are the cap, wires, and rotor? Next would be the control module. Also are you sure it's getting fuel?

How did you check to see if it was getting spark?

Plugs caps and wires and distributor are all in good shape.

Yes it's getting fuel because it will run for 5 minutes just fine after it cools down overnight, then just quits again.
          The spark eventually quits.

I check the spark with a spark tester light.

What is the ignition control module? I have a device in there with 4 wires that has part number BCTU 16184069, but i'm unclear if that is the ignition control module.

That is a sign of a control module, typically they are found part way down the distributor shaft, held in by 2 screws and has one or 2 plugs coming out of the ends. Here is a photo of as an example, but they vary from engine to engine...

You can pull the control module and most auto parts stores can test them for you.

After replacing the ignition module and ignition coil, the issue remained. I brought it to the dealer and they determined it was the pickup coil inside of the distributor that was the issues (red highlighted part in picture). Runs great now. Thanks all.

Very common problem on those Delco distributors.

for $30 maybe I should add one to my spare parts box?

FYI, your new module should have came with dielectric grease to put on the underside of the module. If you did not put it on you will be replacing it again sooner rather than later. It needs it to help dissipate heat.
