    Electrical System Issues

So I’ve been having an issue with the electric system on the boat. For reference, it is a 2004 22V, new to me 6 months ago.

I thought the problem(s) were due to not having a big enough battery. I’ve now put two brand new batteries in and experienced the same issues. The starting battery in right now is an Optima 34M Blue Top, so I think I eliminated the lack of CCA possibility.

When we take off in the morning, everything works great. Perko Switch on Battery 1. The boat has 3 1,000W amps, 6 in boat and 4 tower speakers along with a 12” sub. Because of the noise ordinance on the lake, we only use the in boat speakers. Other big battery draws are the Speedset and the Taps Adjustment.

Around half way through the day, when the music is playing and the boat is underway, if I adjust the taps it turns the radio off and then back on. It stays off as long as I am holding the Taps button. I’m guessing that’s due to the electrical draw?

Then toward the end of the day it gets worse. After ~4 hours of wakeboarding, surfing, skiing, etc. and ~3 hours of float time with the Perko set to “OFF” I have more issues.

While underway, the Speedset won’t turn on. The screen flashes (trying to turn on), beeps, and shuts back off. It repeats that consistently, even with the boat at 3000+ RPM. Also, the radio speakers start surging. They will play for 1 second and turn off for 1 second and repeat that continually.

The battery gauge never reads above 13 volts, but it stays pretty close to that line.

Last time out, after all the issues described above, I tried to switch batteries. For the first time that day, I turned the Perko to Battery 2. It was completely dead. However, it was fully charged when we launched.

I have no idea what’s going on here and I really appreciate if anyone can impart a little wisdom and/or suggestions.

    Thank you!!

This right here tells me that the battery switch is not wired ideally at all. "OFF" should be off for the boat and all loads except the auto bilge.

2nd, for diagnostic purposes, I never trust a dash mounted volt gauge. I want to put a meter right at the alternator and batteries and see exactly what the output is. Next, I move to a suspect component.

Also sounds like a bad ground when you push the taps switch, there are ground bars under the dash and sometimes in the right rear transom.

Thanks for the input guys! Mike, when you say suspect component do you mean the Perko?

In your case, you are experiencing issues with the TAPS, Perfect Pass and stereo, so those are the suspect components. After confirming that the alternator is producing sufficient voltage and the switch is wired correctly, I would move the helm B+ and B- BUSS bars and check the power and ground cables there. Those connections can become loose and/or corrode. Next stop would be to test the ground and voltage at the radio, Perfect Pass and TAPS systems.

I have a very similiar issue - when the TAPS is engaged, the radio quits for a moment then comes back on and the guages flicker. When any electrical component is turned on, all the gages flicker. I have check the ground under the helm, but never did find anything of issue.

I also put another fuse on the TAPS system.

What is hooked to Battery one and what is hooked to battery 2. With switch on battery one, #2 will not get charged.

I had a similar issue my radio would stop working if the bilge kicked on and blow a breaker then both stopped working .

Tracked it down to a dead battery one of my two had a bad cell and my switch would take out the bad battery for engine starting purposes ,
