need alternator help

The orange wire on the alt. gets hot. Too hot to touch, only when the boat is running. Anyone had this problem before?

Are you referring to the large gauge output wire? Heat would be an indication of current flow. It would probably be a good idea to get a voltmeter on that circuit and see if the alternator is over charging. A bad battery can also cause the alternator to have excessive output. Also, what type of, if any aftermarket accessory loads, like stereo gear, do you have connected to the system?
