    Stereo "noise" when engine running

Our stereo has always worked fine. But in the past couple weeks it has developed a very annoying background noise while the engine is running. It thumps just fine (very clear w/ no noise)when the boat is off but if you start the engine there is a whine in the background.

Anyone else had this problem? Any ideas? alternator or voltage regulator?

    thanks

Give us a run down of what the stereo consists of as far as gear. Also, has there been any upgrades or additions to the system? Has there been any service or repair work done on the boat lately?

I had a very annoying issue that popped up on mine like that. Turned out one of the RCA jacks into the amp was a little loose. I had to pinch the outter flanges slightly and it was as simple as that.
      Waiting for another good one!

If no changes or new equipment, it's likely a ground loop somewhere - caused by a bad connection as described by FiveFlat. Lots of vibration on a boat lead to connectors that wiggle loose.

Well, its a clarion marine cd head unit. I think it is the standard head unit. 6 interior rockford fosgate speakers, 4 fosgate tower speakers and a subwoofer. 3 amps. one for interior one for tower and one for subwoofer. There is a dial under the steering wheel to control bass to the subwoofer or subwoofer volume? I'm not sure. Driver controls and transom controls.

          No recent work done.

I had a problem a year or so ago that sounds similar. I separated the RCA's, ground wires and power cables.. problem solved.

If it's a high pitched whine like a mosquito on steroids that seems to change along with engine RPM, I would say you likely have a bad ground somewhere OR depending on how long since maintenance this can also be caused by low quality spark plug leads.

                Good luck. Let us know.
