    Taps, defeating auto up feature

I just purchased a 2004 22V and love it except for a few things. One being the feature that retracts my elec tab every time I turn off the ignition. There is supposed to be a module somwhere that I can bypass and have yet to find it. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well got not responses but here is what I found. Under the dash there is a black box with a sticker marked "Taps". It has several wires coming and going but don't be scared off. Just take the red (constant) and org (ign) coming from the box and tie them together to a constant hot. There you have it a Taps system that won't reset every time you turn the key off. Best part is when you turn the battery switch off it will retract like it did before. This is great for mooring or putting back on trailer. For mooring having the ram closed up keeps it from corroding as fast and when it is in the up position it makes it safer to get back on your trailer.

    There you have it.

ps Thanks Lee for your help in finding the lil black box and for contact info for the mfr of the system.

      Good info, thank you!

Have you already made the mod? If not, when do you plan on doing it?

There was a thread on this from a long time ago. I was going to do the same but never got a chance to.

Never found that thread, but wish I had. Prob would have saved me an hr or so.

And yes I did the mod in the morn and used it all afternoon. So far so good and even the gage works the same.

I traced all the wires in and out of the Taps control box and then put a meter on them. One suggestion from a Tige' mechanic was to put the Taps system on an aux switch so that it could be turned on and off. This had some limitations and was not was I was looking for. After testing the system I was able to make it work manually as my Schiada used to. It is WAY more convenient, especially when boarding or skiing. Having to reset the tab every time I shut off the motor was crazy and I still really don't get why they set it up that way. I have heard that the next generation system had a five minute delay to allow you to pick up your boarders or skiers and not have to reset the tabs every time. I found the new Bennette tabs have an auto up option as well. There must be something to it that I'm not getting. According to Bennett it is a safey feature for boats not equipped with a trim indicator. But I love the modification and the way the system operates now.

Hope it helps any of you looking to do this mod.

JGR - If you hooked the red (constant) and org (ign) to a "switched" hot wire (one of the extra AUX switches) would the taps retract up when you toggled the AUX switch off? This would be handy in a situation where you moor the boat but want to leave the battery on for the bildge... toggle the switch OFF when you moor and the TAPS retracts ... toggle the AUX switch ON when boating to take advantage of your modification.

It is a great option and has worked for me since I made the modification. As far as I know the bilge will operate with the key OFF. It should be wired directly to one of your batteries. Mine is. But either way it will hold your TAPS setting.

Let me know how it works out for ya.
