Built a sub enclosure today - FINALLY!

I finally had a day to myself so I could build a nice box for the factory 10" Kicker that came in the boat. I've been trying to get to this for basically 2 years. I made it out of MDF and plan to use that truck bet coating stuff (or rubberized under coating) to cover it.

I spray bombed the vent black because I was just going to carpet it - now I think I am going to bondo the screw holes, sand smooth and then go with the coating stuff.



Box is 15" wide x 15" high and then 17" deep on the top and 21" deep on the bottom, port is 13.5" x 2" x 20".

Can't wait to hear it!

While you got access to get that top panel off, before you bondo or putty the holes, do yourself a favor and spray the inside. It's a pain in the butt to do it after you've got er all put together! But you def. wanna seal off the inside too!

I agree with Tanner, if you can do it, spray the inside of the box.

My reasoning:
I will still argue with basically everybody about using MDF in a boat. In my opinion it should be avoided. while MDF is a super material for building speakers, it is a super material for building FULL RANGE speakers. In a subwoofer, the wavelength of the sounds being reproduced are WAY too long to benefit from the inert nature of MDF.

Spray the interior of the enclosure well, and spray the exterior well,and then be sure to use some feet to elevate the box off of the floor. This will help you keep the box as dry as possible, and should prevent it from swelling and crumbling...

Despite my quick soabbox rant about MDF, that enclosure looks amazing! I think you did a spectacular job, and it should sound great! Way to go man!

Thanks for the tips and comments! I will spray the inside of the box for sure! I had a redwood 2x4 laying around that I put 2 coats of outdoor polyurethane on that I am using to lift the box up off of the floor. I figure if redwood is good enough for a deck that sits outside in the elements 24x7, that it should work pretty good for a speaker box support.

Thanks! It's Admiral Blue (they switched to a darker hue of quasar blue for 94-96). I believe the blue is the same as Yamaha uses.

Phil, what should you use to build a box? I am only asking because my MDF got soaked when my heater core busted and now it is all swollen. I am gonna have to build a new box, so what wood??
