Stereo staying on with a switch?

I was wondering about hooking up my 420 to a switch instead of from the remote wire from the HU. It would be nice to not even have my HU on when I am listening to the IPOD connected to the 420. I could also not have the music stop every time I turn the key. I have an extra switch or two on my dash.

Can I hook up the 420 turn on wire to a switch on the dash? Then I do not have to have the HU even on when I listen to music. I was considering doing the same thing with the HU as well.

I think I am smart enough to remember to cut the switch when I leave the boat.

Yep, just moved the red ACC wire, for the H/U "switched" 12v, from the key switch to an unused switch in the dash.

Looking for a switch cover with a speaker or something on it that indicates it is for the stereo.

So it is probably the red wire? And which spot on the ACC switch is the one that the power comes from?

I wonder if Korgae can get some tiny decals done that would be the ticket? Probably not worth the PIA, but I need to get my ballast switches labeled too. I forget which way fills them up sometimes, and I installed them!

Yes, you can do this, I just bought 2008 22ve and had the dealership make the switch. They changed the wire to the extra ACC switch. It is very nice to turn off the engine and switch riders without the the radio going off.

Should be only 1 red wire on the back of the key switch that is hot when the key is in the ACC position.

And I mean which is the hot spot on the switch, not the key? There are like 6 tabs for wires on it, of which 2 are already taken.

I really need to get me a Digital Volt Meter. I get overwhelmed when I look at them at the hardware store, any suggestions? I could then just check which one is hot with the switch on and cold when the switch is off.

I got ya, sorry. Use either a DVOM or a 12V test lamp and find one that is hot when the switch is on.

For professional grade, I would recommend a Fluke, I have had a Fluke 88 for about 12 yrs now. It has auto ranging for both Ohms and volts, AC and DC, Min/Max feature that will record a change in about a 100th of a sec sample rate, and read low amp draws. With added accessories, you can read temp, RPM, and hi amp draws.

One like this from Radio Shack will do most anything a DIY'r needs at a decent price.
