Not sure what size kicker ZX amp it is. But its the one that runs my speakers in the boat and my sub.. It keeps shutting on and off. When its on my sub sounds bad. it almost sounds like it is blown.... Any ideas of what would cause this??? Its not shutting of the amp that runs my tower speakers....

The sub could be bad or blown, or the sub section of the amp could be bad. It happens.
Check to see if there is a speaker wire to the subwoofer that is shorting to something. This is not as likely in a boat as in a car, (way less metal) but it is pretty common sometimes to have a strand or two touching at either the amp connections or at the woofer. That would create the situation you are describing. It's not an optical illusion.
It just looks like one.....

I figured we'll check the easy stuff first like settings, then move on to shorts and bad components

I would hang and help now, but I have to be somewhere here in a while. I will check tomorrow.
Good luck, and hopefully it is something super simple. It's not an optical illusion.

If you think the settings are good, then lest check the sub circuit resistance. Remove the brown and black (I think) wires from the Sub output on the amp. Take a DVOM and clip 1 lead to each wire. Should be about 2ohm as the sub has 2 4ohm coils that should be wired parallel.
*EDIT* Heading to the house and have some work to do and will be in my boat doing an amp upgrade of all things. feel free to call as it may be late before i get back on.Last edited by chpthril; 05-27-2008, 10:16 PM.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

I've noticed that when adjusting the taps it will pop in the tower speakers. At one point the ring terminal on my isolator wire came loose, and it stopped. Hooked it back up and it came back. I then rewired and moved the taps to the starting battery and problem solved.... So my theory is that the taps actuator must pull a pretty heavy load.
As for your amp going into protect. How many cabin speakers do you have? If you have 6, Tige likes to wire the 4 speakers into parallel thus causing issues for some. You may want to take some resistance readings at your amps.
For the sub.... are you sure your crossover and gains are set correctly? That could cause it to sound bad. Another long shot is to make sure your phase isn't reversed.
I've got a thread going that I've been trouble shooting a problem. I kept it going with convo to myself so that others could use to help them learn how to trouble shoot.

First thing we need to know though.... how quickly are your amps going into protect? Is this immediate at a certain volume?... Or is this after 20 mins or so?Being a major OU fan and a staunch conservative.... I am perpetually vexed w/ the conundrum of who to hate more. Obama or the Univ. of Saxet.

I am not a stereo person by any means. But, are you turning on your amp via the HU? Could it be that the signal from the HU to the amp isn't strong enough that the amp doesn't know it is turned on? Mine did this for awhile and would continue to play after 15 minutes of going on and off. Told the stereo installers and that is what they said might be my issue.
