The phoenix Gold Tantrum LD66 Line Driver is a device that will boost the signal from the head unit up to as high as 8 Volts RMS. I believe the Clarion XMD3 is normally outputting about 2 Volts. This gives the benefit of higher input level to the amplifiers and thus higher output levels. Another benefit is that the higher voltage allows me to run with a much lower gain setting on the amps. I learned about this when I wired my tower speakers a couple of years ago and was not pleased with the output. This is an older model and I do not think it is offered any longer. If it ever goes south I will definitely find a replacement. It makes a great difference.

Phil, I find that I don't get an acceptable amount of control using the bass line wipers. Are the ones included with the Kicker amps for a specific range, or do they lower the input levels? If they are like most (boosting 45Hz) then I would opt for at minimum 2 sets of RCAs to the amps. One dedicated to the sub.
Bass boost is centered at 40 Hz and is not remote.
Sub level IS remote, and set up correctly, (i.e. with a knowledgeable operator who can understand signs of clipping) the REMOTE sub level does a good job of removing the need for a second set of RCA cables. It's not an optical illusion.
It just looks like one.....
