That hijacking was Ok with me... I need some humor!

Had the filters installed today and took the boat out tonight UGHHHHH!!!!! It still has a whinning noise. It's a little better but not much.

I did notice that the filters were installed closer to the deck rather than closer to the amps? Could that be the result?

I'm going to take my fake a lake to work tomorrow and see if it does it running the boat that way and suggest that the filters be moved coming from the amps? (Basically I know sh*T about stereos other than I like music and I like it loud and crisp). A friend of mine and employee is the one doing the work for me. He knows his stuff. He's installed 6 systems for me alone in my vehicles and many many more of his own in cars and trucks. This is his second one in a boat. Maybe he's missing one step or something. He's really bummed about it not working properly for me.

Next option might be wait the 2 weeks to get it to CarToys where they have a good reputation for working on boats. Bad part is I leave next weekend for 7 days on the water.

The Clarion system that was in it before I started this project is satrting to sound pretty good at this point especially after about $1,500.00?

    HELP

      HELP
      FIRST THING:
You say it is whining; it goes up and down with engine revs, right? If so, it is alternator noise.

If it is being radiated and "injected" into the RCA's, moving the filters to the amp end might help. These are in-line RCA filters, correct?

NEXT THING: regardless where the noise is coming from, use a dedicated LARGE, (#10AWG) wire and re-run the radio ground to the ground (-) terminal of your largest amp. This will do two things, bringing the radio ground closer to the amp ground in terms of voltage difference, (a common source of ground loops) AND it will take advantage of some of the capacitive filtering that is going on just inside of the amplifier.

You might even consider re-running your radio power leads on dedicated wiring straight to the battery, and use a relay off of the key switch to turn on and off the red radio power wire. If you need to go to this step, we can provide a schematic; no need yet, I do not think. If you do that, throw a 10A fuse in-line for this dedicated positive wiring next to the battery; within 7 inches preferrably.

I GUESS LASTLY: The 50v 2200 microfarad caps I suggest on the radio's power harness wiring is an excellent solution, but the caps are at times hard to find, and I wonder if you could locate a couple prior to your trip next weekend. Look for 'em, but don't do that in lieu of trying the other steps identified above.

By all means keep us in the "loop" with regards to the things you try. I for one would love to hear that you got it fixed prior to departing on your trip.

            Sorry for thre delay.

Still the same. My son took the boat to Cartoys this past weekend. They worked on it for 2 hours and have now clue as to the solution.

We put the filters on coming out of the amps and that was not the problem. Separated the RCA's from power leads, not problem.

            Checked Deck, it's OK.

            Amps are all OK.

One idea came out of the trip, was that maybe the 4 channel Fosgate amp might be too close to one of the batteries.

For $300.00 they would redo all of the wiring but still would not guarantee it would correct the problem.

Another option was suggested that I get rid of the 4 channel Fosgate that's running the cabin speakers and the Clarion that's running the Tower speakers and repalce those 2 with a 6 channel amp? I need to think about it and check if they will credit me for the 4 channel.

At this point I will use it this next week on vacation and deal with it when I get back.

I just moved this past weekend, still not done with that. The trip into the stereo store produced a flat on the trailer, my son put the bimini up for the stereo tech cause it started to rain, he could'nt figure out how to get it back down and into the storage case,,,, blah, blah, blah!

            More to come,
Mark ( going to change my name to "have no luck at all").

Have you tried taking the charge wire off the altenator and running it? If the noise goes away you may have a bad Diode in the alt. this can cause dirty DC voltage from the alt.

I still think it will come down to a bad Ground or Power run I hope you find it.

Proximity to the batteries has nothing to do with it. Don't spend money on THAT non-fix!!!

I agree with both comments below that you might have a popped diode, or simply a grounding issue.

By chance do you have a dual battery switch that might have been switched past/through OFF while the engine was running?
That will in most cases take out the voltage regulator, and might lead to the noise you are experiencing...

Hang in there; we are here for ya!!! Good luck with the move, and the flat. BTW, I bet it is only flat on one side; just turn the tire over and put the round part on the ground.

Is this only with the engine running, or even while running off the batteries. If it is when the engine is running, then as Philz said you have an alt problem caused by a diode or regulator.
