I know right... A 4' x 8' sheet of 3/4 marine birch in my neck of the woods is $65... They've got a pretty nice profit margin on this piece.

A quality ported marine enclosure may have 8-12 hours labor wrapped up in it. Multiply that by the shop's labor rate. Minus the custom sea deck or whatever, there may be $150 in materials. Looking at the finished edges of the sea deck, its clear these are custom cut not cut off a stock sheet. So that adds to the cost, not to mention the setup time to do the custom graphics.

Yes, $850 is expensive, but I can see this coming in at that price with just a small margin.

i agree it aint cheap to make, especially while adding in the seadek and such, I know it takes time, especially after what i just went through, but when you add the 1000$ sub to that, holy moly, i guess its for someone with more money than me, I gotta save my pennies so I can get my custom sac for the starboard side still. I am not denying its pretty cool looking though.

What percentage of $130,000 is $850?

High dollar boats are selling left and right. At that point $850 really is just a drop in the bucket. Why sell something for, say, $500 if you can get a guy to buy it for $850? If I had $4000 to blow away on GSA I wouldn't be building my TAPS 21 system. Capitalism my friends.

personally think it's an ugly box. too much advertising for me. I'd rather take that $850 and have chp make a custom box that doesn't scream steal me and blends into the interior.

In a newer boat with the sea deck flooring it would probly blend pretty good under the dash.. I think $850 is ridiculously high. I get that there was some initial cost to design the sea deck designs, but the box specs and cut sheet come straight from wet sounds web site. SCWAKE had no time investment in this design. Somebody with a stack of birch plywood and a table saw could cut enough pieces for 20 boxes in an hour.. Once sea deck has the design in their system, they can CNC these sheets in no time and SCWAKE probly has stacks of them now. Actual build time on this box now is probly very low..

8-12 hours in a custom built to fit enclosure is understandable... This is far from custom

Reading the full ad, it seams that the sea dek can be customized, rather then stacks if precut material ready to slap on. So basically, each box could be a 1-off of the last one.

You can build and sea deck a one off for that price or less than that price brother, It's MDF also by the looks, not birch. Very few applications or boats would be able to use that as is without cosmetic adjustment to not look out of place. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice looking box but how many boats have you done where it's that easy for eye appeal? Custom one off enclosures are where we shine at. dont know about you but for that price my customers want lights and bling. CNC is just a fancy word for someone who can't cut straight.. Sorry.. Oh I'm in trouble now...

It's MDF also by the looks, not birch.

Could be MDO and sealed with a 2-part epoxy. Done right, its more about the build process and less about the material.

Thats my point. They've put the labor into it and you put the credit card number to it, done. Whether you do it for a living or do it for fun, your time is worth something IMO. If you factor only the materials and not your time, then heck yeah for sure, you will come out cheaper doing it yourself. But what if you dont have the time, shop and tools to do it.

Just to be clear, im not trying to sell these for SCWake, dont even know who they are, just trying to say that i dont think their price is too far off if the box is built right.
