Trying to convince my wife that she wants to upgrade our current 12" to one of these guys... I'm looking on the Wet Sounds site, and is this sub only offered in a DVC 2 ohm configuration? Meaning it can only be wired to either a 1 or 4 ohm load? Is there a way to wire dual 2 ohm coils into a 2 ohm final? I ask because I have the kicker kx1200.1 as my sub amp and its rated at 1200 rms @ 2 ohms. Nowhere do I see that it can handle a 1 ohm load. Is the SD2 basically the only marine amp that can run this sub due to its wiring options?

Yes, the Xs-XXX can only be wired to a 1 ohm or 4 ohm, no other way to do it.
No, the KX1200.1 is not stable below 2 ohm and 4 ohm will not get you the wattage you need.
The SD-2 bridged @ 4 ohm is about the only marine amp thats going to deliver the wattage.
other options would be the Kicker KX2400.1 or Arc audio xdi1100.1
So I gotta ask, what is it that you are driving with the KX1200.1? If it will handle the KX1200.1, then the XXXv2 may not actually be an upgrade from your current 12" woofer.Last edited by chpthril; 12-26-2015, 02:53 AM.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

Currently running an Image Dynamics IDMax 12" dual 4 ohm, wired to 2 ohm final, in a ported enclosure under the helm.. RMS is 1000 watts, hence the kx1200.1 running it.. Pretty happy with the set up and it's loud enough to turn heads wherever we go.. I've had it a few years now, started with it in my Yukon, moved it to the boat.. All other boat equipment is Wet Sounds now, so why now match the sub also. Would rather not buy another amp though. To be honest, I've never even heard the wet sounds sub so I'm just assuming that it would be better than what I currently have because it's newer, it's marine rated, and all my other Wet Sounds stuff is awesome. Here's my current sub:

Hey True-K, can i continue "spewing" info now?
From an output standpoint, two equal sized woofer, both in ported enclosures and both powered with similar wattage, will have very similar output in terms of moving air. The next thing we would want to look at, would the the xmax, or the cones excursion. The one with the most excursion has the advantage. From a construction standpoint, the Wet Sounds would likely be an upgrade as it is a true marine woofer. Nothing about the woofer is an off the shelf speaker component. Everything about the woofer is designed for a boat, including its tuning that allows it to work in a relatively small enclosure.
Will the XXXv2 be an upgrade in output, not really
will is sound better, thats up to your ears
Is a better woofer for the marine environment, absolutely
will it work with your current KX1200.1, wired in series to 4 ohm would = 600W rms output. Sadly, you would want a new amp in order to drive the woofer to its potential.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

The smaller enclosure capability is a major selling point to me because my current box is taking up all my leg room under the steering wheel, hence my question earlier this month about turning my whole mid starboard storage area into an enclosure. I ended up measuring that out and its a solid 10 ft3.. Anyways, it looks like a smaller enclosure would enable me to just cut the wall under the helm and push the box back into this area. I could do that with my current set up if I went to a sealed box, but I just don't know if I want that. I like the sound produced by a ported enclosure so much more.. Thanks for the help. Oh, do you know anything about MTX amps? A quick Google search found the MTXthunder series and they have a 1200.1 and a 1500.1 that claim said watts RMS at 1 ohm. Any knowledge about them? Are they're ratings true power? I've never used MTX equipment. They aren't marine rated, but neither is my current KX and the 1500.1 is half the price of the SD2.
Another search shows that fosgate has a marine amp with 1200 rms at 1 ohm also.. Again, half the money of the SD.. No experience with fosgate products either, they do have a Wakesetter on their marine page though.. Does Malibu use fosgate?Last edited by Bryan; 12-27-2015, 03:30 PM.

I dont know the details of the ID's T/S perimeters, so I dont know how it would perform in a sealed enclosure. I can say for sure, you would want to stick with a ports for the XXXv2. Ported is an automatic 3bd increase in output over a sealed anyway.
Now a days, MTX has a lot of open tooling, meaning they do little in-house engineering, and more component sourcing. They are not what they once were.
I would certainly suggest the rockford M1200.1 as a 1 ohm stable marine option for 2 ohm DVC XXXv2. One thing I do like about it, is that it has an infrasonic filter. Makes tuning with the ported enclosure, much easier. Malibu does use rockford gear, but they use the less expensive punch series car amps.
Unless you boat in salt or brakish water, I would not let the fact that an amp is not marine built, be a disqualifier.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

It is a one chnl/mono amp so nothing to bridge. The two woofer coils would be wired in parallel to 1 ohm. Amp will then deliver the 1200 RMS.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

Bryan,
The inputs are so you don't cram dual sets of wire into the amplifier. It's for a clean look.
For the questions above. Arc is also a very well performing brand if the marine SD is expensive. Rockford would be below Arc, MTX below that.
If you run a XXX you do not have to get the SD2. You can run a Arc Audio mono block and crush on the woofer with more output Than the ID will do currently.
Yes the ID can be sealed or vented, But the sealed will not have the same output as vented with the same power. Install and tuning makes a huge difference in any subwoofer even with the same size and specs. You can have two of the same subs installed and tuned differently, making them not sound or perform the same. Will the XXX be a upgrade, sure! You will now have a true marine speaker which is good in the open environment, You will also have the matching brand. Will it perform better? Depends on your installer and his tuning skills.Kaotik Kustomz: WetSounds, Arc, Kicker, Focal, Masconi, Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, MTX, Life Form, Lumitec, Shadow Caster, Fly High, Llumarr, Sun Tek, SolarFX....

True.. The arc looks like a nice brand but it all looks pretty pricey too. If I'm gonna purchase the xxx and an amp to push it, I'm gonna have to go a bit cheaper on the amp. I know, that sucks.. Hopefully I can still get the power needed. The fosgate pm1000 looks to be a little better quality than the m1200. It seems to be rated a couple hundred watts less, but says on the spec page that actual power is around 1400 rms at 1ohm..

That's fine, it's your system and money. Give a amp price range you want and we can better help with choices.. Just know that the cheaper it is the lower the quality of the amplifier in many aspect if this does not matter to you, you have MANY choices..
The m1200 (499MSRP)is cheaper than the new prime pm1000 (649MSRP)?Kaotik Kustomz: WetSounds, Arc, Kicker, Focal, Masconi, Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, MTX, Life Form, Lumitec, Shadow Caster, Fly High, Llumarr, Sun Tek, SolarFX....
