Amplifier 4 gage ground wire question

When removing my batteries for the winter I noticed that my ground wire to my amplifier(s) fell apart where it connects to the ground battery terminal. As I began to cut the wire back I noticed it was very brittle and had a white powder inside. There is now wire damage to the wire at the amplifier block only back at the battery connection. What could be causing this decay of the wire and what is the whitish powder inside the wire casing. Any advise? My power cable is also 4 gage and is inperfect condition, so not sure what is casuing just the ground wire to decay.

Probably leaking battety acid. Remove the battery and clean it with baking powder to neutralize the acid. Some also use soda. Wash it all off and spray terminal spray on the terminals. You may need to replace the wires.

Its corrosion mainly do to the conductor being open to the elements. To repair, you will need to cut the cabling back until you get to good clean wire. To prevent this in the future, I prefer to use heatshrink thats lined with adhesive, to bridge the gap between the terminal and insulation.
