    Potential Amp Upgrade time

So this past weekend was the annual WWS Tige reunion. My wife and I were lucky enough to win the grand prize which is a $2500 Pimp My Tige store credit. Since we custom ordered our Tige last year it has pretty much everything we ever wanted. We have the clamping board racks, the poseidon mat, heater etc.... So I am thinking maybe we upgrade our amps to the Sinister series amps from WS.

    Current system consists of

    4 Rev 10s each pair on a syn 4.
    8 XS 650s on a syn 4
    XS 12 on a syn 2
RE Audio MX 12 on a PPI Sa 2000.1
I also have 2 huge stereo batteries that are brand new for this season.

So I am contemplating going to a SD 2 to run my towers and then I guess and SD4 for the interiors? Houston was it you that did 2 SD6s and have one running each side of your boat? I guess I just want to get the best sounding set up possible. What I have now sound freaking incredible. I know I will gain some efficiency and my batteries should last longer by upgrading to the SD series. Also going from 5 amps to 4 amps should help. I am also contemplating getting an SD2 for the MX12 but I am not sure if the wife will divorce me if I tell her we are going to have to come out of pocket some for the 3 SD series amps. So any help would be appreciated.

I think Houston has JL audio speakers for his cabin and then WS for the tower and sub. I think you should figure out how to get some 808's in there if you are going to stick with Wetsounds stuff. 2 pairs in the cabin would be pretty sweet.

Would love to know if someone can explain the difference between 808's and JL's MX 7.7 aside from the insane price JL wants.

        MyBoat,

Welcome to the TO site. To start with, the WS-808 is a convertible, where the JL 7.7 MX is a coax. The 808 can be installed as a grill-mounted coax or a true component set.

Power handling, the 808 has a higher RMS and Peak.
        Both are 4 ohm
        similar freq response
The 808 is a little larger in both the OD and cutout. This means a little more surface area, but not enough too get hung up on.
        The 7.7 has a .75 tweeter and the 808 has a 1" dome IIRC

The JL "M" series would actually be a better comparison to the WS 808. The "M" series is a component, but not convertible like the 808. The M has a similar power handling to the 808. The M series has a larger tweeter then the MX series.

        Hope that helps.

Your boat is already so loud still owe you a Thank-you for playing Journey at Squids event, there was a intended purpose for Robert at Wake9. While driving the comp boat I could hear your boat loud and clear.

Is the MX-12 2 ohm DVC?

Going from dual Syn-4 to a single SD-2 is a slight drop in total wattage, but really not audible. You go from 2 amps to 1 and gain some efficiency. If space for amps is not an issue, this change would go to the bottom of my list for now.

A single SD-4 is perfect for your 8 in-boats, even if you upgraded some of the current 6.5 to 8". But if you did, I would consider the SD-6 so the larger 808's have their own chnls.

Although there may be a gain in efficiency, current draw is current draw. Going with the SD amps over the Syn amps will be a considerable increase in total wattage, so the draw on your batteries will likely be about the same.

Correct Tim. As for amps, I have a SD2 on the sub and 2) SD6 for the 4) Rev10's and 4pr of JL 7.7" components. I have another JL M200/2 running a pair of JL 7.7" coax in the bow.

The 2) SD6's gave me quite a bit more power than any other combo of 2 amps. One SD6 runs the 2 left Rev10's and the left in boat speakers and the other runs the right 2 Rev10's and right in boat speakers.

When wired this way, each Rev10 is getting 585W. Each of the 8) JL 7.7" component speakers is getting almost 150W.

                2) SD6's with all channels bridged = 3510W RMS

SD2 and SD4 with all channels bridged = 2620W RMS

Keep an eye out on ebay and you can pick the JL's up for $200-$250 a pair. I haven't heard the 808's yet but absolutely love the sound of the JL's. I still want to hear the JL 8.8's. I like the sound of JL's tweeter a little more than the WS but everyone has their own preference.

Yes my MX 12 is a 2 ohm DVC sub. I guess my main goal here is to just get the best sounding set up I can with what I have available. I have racked my brain trying to figure out what else I could use the money for and it just keeps coming back to the stereo. Figure if I upgrade to some SD amps I can sell off my syn series amps and actually pocket the cash. The wife and I have a honeymoon coming up since we couldn't take it last year after we got married so some extra cash in the bank sounds appealing.

So do I do 2 SD6s and 4 808s (2 pairs)? I can then pull the syn 2 off the XS 12 I have in the rear locker and put it on the bow speakers. Do I go with some other combo??? I do kind of like the idea of adding some power to the rev 10s but honestly it is so dang loud now I don't know how much of a difference it will make other than they might run more efficiently. As for the draw on the batteries it isn't a big deal. I plug them in when I get the boat home and they are hooked to the alternator so they should be good regardless of what i do.

No problem on the Journey Majestic! How come no one told me you were driving the comp boat??? Would of loved to have met you in person.

Maybe you could get some custom vinyl for the boat? Giant charge harder logo on the side?
