Subwoofer info- Whats your favorite sub?

Just wanted some peoples opinion, because im not satisfied with my sub out-put in my boat. Im thinking about adding a pair of JL 12" W6's, or W7's, or a pair of Kicker 12" L5's, or L7's- in the storage under the glove box. I may just do one under there tho? At this point im thinking of keeping the XXX 12 under the helm, and just add to it, but i have read that it could sound bad, or odd with mix matching subs..?

Whats your favorite sounding sub setup????

I'll start, My favorite sub was a Kicker L5 with 500 watts in a sealed box, and the boat was a 2008 Malibu VLX.

For me, my favorite sub is the one thats executed just right. Bigger sub means more output. More amplifier power, means more output. Some subs are more SPL and others are more SQ. The biggest issue with multiple subs, where they are different brands or just different models form the same manufacturer, is their locations in relation to each other. If all are firing into the main cabin, then there can be some phase cancellation. If one is stowed in a closed locker, its musical contribution is reduced and it just becomes a boat shaker. This can be just fine as long as its a secondary sub and not the only sub.

If I am reading correctly, you have a 12 xxx under the helm and you are not happy with its current output. Adding more subs may just add up to even more disappointment in the system. So, im real curious in the details about the current sub setup:

What is it that you are not happy with and what are you looking to get?
      Amp and all its setting
      Exact details about the enclosure
Source unit or EQ and where is the sub amp getting its signal

SO before spending a dime, I would make sure you are getting the most out of your current investment. Maybe you are just a total bass-head and you are after brain crushing eye popping bass. In that case, more surface area and more power may be all that needed. then again, maybe you current setup is only running on 7 cylinders so to speaker and a tune up is needed.

The system sounds great in the boat, but i guess i am a bass-head, and want to slay fish!
        Current boat setup
syn4= powers 4 pair of xs650 (tuned at about 100-110hz)
syn4= powers 1 paris of pro80's (tuned at about 80-90hz)
syn1= power 1 xs-xxx 12 (the old one) under the helm and the box is to spec of the Wet Sound triangle ported box, the syn1 is tuned per your instructions Mike, or as close as i could get it. Its hard to tell exactly tho. (about 32hz if i remember)

        1. Im not happy with the punch of the bass at the island after a day of riding. (outside the boat)
        2. Amp settings per your instructions, or to the best of my ability.
        3. The inclosure is dead on to the triangle ported box in the wet sounds instuctions
        4. Head unit is the stock Clarion, and it has a WS420 (the old one). I hope this is the answer your looking for..?

I like brain crushing eye poping bass!!!! I sure wish you where local Mike! Cause i would have this boat at your shop for some fine tuning!!

I run a 13w7 powered by a JL 1000/1. It pounds, inside and out of the boat. I have another amp and sub sitting around, but there's no room to get an identical box in the observers compartment, which would b ideal IMO for a boat shaker, as well as raw output with the hatch up at the sand bar. My 1 w7 is a little louder then 2 w6s, with both powered by a 1000/1. 2 kickers can get crazy loud too, but the SQ of the w7 is way better IMO. I've never heard a xxx so I'm not much help there.

Our old RZ2 demo boat had two XS-XXX off two SYN-1. They were in the dual slot loaded boxes. SPL design on our site. That boat would kill fish. You can see the you tube video of it boiling water and splashing off the hull. Many that heard that boat will tell you it was the hardest hiting boat they ever heard.

So one thought would be to build a new enclosure using the dual slot loaded design. Also, make sure both coils are hooked up in parallel so the speaker is 1 ohm mono. Also, make sure it is tuned right and sub sonic filter is set right. If set too high you could be losing a lot of bass.

A single xxx should knock really hard. So set up sounds like it needs to be looked over first. If you are still wanting more. Then a second matching sub in the same enclosure mirror image on the passenger compartment. Make sure they are on the same plane. We vented the walkway. We removed the trash can and used that entire opening as a vent. When running a sub in the passenger compartment, you need to vent it with a vent at least the size of the woofer you are installing.

We have some great dealers in the DFW area. Have you thought about taking it to one of them? Let us know, you can call us at 877-938-7757. Ask for Simon. He can find you a dealer and also help with the set up. He built those enclosures for the Tige.

Wow, one W7 is louder than to W6's in a boat. I would have never thought so. I have been kicking around the idea of run three W3's off the Syn1. One under helm, and 2 on pass side.
Tim, i was going to build that dual slot loaded box, but it was to tall to fit under the helm,,, or it was more involved than i wanted to get into with trying to move all that stuff up as i have seen others do, but it did not look like there was room for it to move up! Oh i talked to the guys at Wet sounds and they told me to run that sub a 4ohms!!! I will try running it a 1ohm, and see what happens.

At 1ohm, you have to be very good and diligent at setting the amp gain, crossover, subsonic filter and tuning the system.

The amp will put out more power which is good (though according to specs it's only 150W more) but the amp will lose some control over the woofer and also generate a kit more heat.

I bet the dual slot loaded enclosure would be a big upgrade. Mine sounds really good.

I'm unsure of in a boat, but my w7 was louder them the w6s in my truck off the same 1000 watts. I'm anxious to hear a xxx though.

Yes, my guys always recommend running a xxx off a syn-1 at 4 ohms when speaking with a consumer. As it is a safer set up as far as power goes. The syn-1 can put out a LOT more than 1000 watts at 1 ohm. So very careful tuning is needed. 1 ohm is how a lot of dealers installed them. Give Simon a call. I will make sure he knows about this thread. He can walk you through the safe settings.

The new XS-XXX v2 handles more power. Houstonshark is running a SD2 for 1250 watts on it.

The new demo Z3 has four xxx v2 in a ported enclosure we built into the hull of the boat. Running four sd2.

Boat is almost done. We can't wait to hear it. I will have a full build thread soon.

You can change the dual slot loaded box to fit without as much cutting. Just make sure you keep same airspace. Simon can help with that as well.

Has anyone heard the ws as10? How would it sound enclosed in the port side locker? I am wondering if I should go with something like that or a regular sub install under the helm. Thoughts? I'm just looking for clean, crisp sound in the boat and for surfing. Not too concerned about party cove / sand bar volume as I'm old!! Lol

Your not going to get much out of it if it is in the enclosed locker. Under the helm is the most common place.
