Time to upgrade the R20. Thoughts?

I'm looking to upgrade the factory stereo in the 2012 R20. I currently have the 4 stock wetsounds 6.5 with the clarion deck. I'd like to add a sub, tower speakers and add some juice to the existing speakers. We do quite a bit more surfing than wakeboarding, so I'm leaning heavily towards a pair of the ICON8's for the tower.

For the sub, I was looking at possibly doing the Wetsounds HTSAAS10 (all in one amp/sub/box combo) It would make installation quicker, but don't know if it would sound better that doing my own enclosure with the XS-10FA.

Not sure what would be the best move for amps to get power to everything. I'm guessing the HT-2 would be good for the towers.

I would run everything through WS420.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Lems,

Excelent idea to add an amp for the in-boats. Something in the range of a respectable 50W rms up to 125W rms to each.

For a surf setup, the Icons are a good option.

The HT-AS10 will absolutely sound better then placing an infinite-baffle sub like the XS-10fa in a small enclosure. The 10fa is designed and tuned for a very large enclosure, i.e infinite-baffle. If you are up to doing an enclosure, I would suggest going with the XS-12 or the SS-10B. But, keep in mind, that the boat will have a lot to do with what direction you go, unless you are up to a big project. The available space for an enclosure will dictate the sub options.

Amps: The HT-2 is a perfect amp for the Icon-8. I would work out the sub first, then the amps will fall into place.

The HT-AS10 sounds good and would be a really good, simple subwoofer solution.

Thanks for the opinion. So assuming I go with the HT-AS10 for my sub option, is the HT-6 a good amp to power the 4 in boats and single pair of Icon8's? Is this overkill? Is there a better option?

HT-6 would be fine, although an HT-4 for the in-boats and HT-2 for the Icons would take it up a notch for the Icons.

Wouldn't I already be overpowering the speakers. If I ran two of the channels to the in boat speakers and ran them in paralell, then they would be getting 75w a peice at 2 ohms. The ICON's would be getting 220 a piece @ 4 ohms, when I bridge the 4 channels down to 2. Am I thinking about this correctly? Initially, I was thinking I'd be over powering my setup with the HT-6, but you're suggesting I run even more power to the speakers with the HT-2 and HT-4.

I'm sure you've answered this question many times before, just wondering the reason.

Thanks for all your input Mike. Can I IM you for pricing on this setup? You're a WS dealer, right?

4 ohm Bridged output of the HT-6 is 300W, which is too strong for the Icon-8. If you go the HT-6 route, I would run 1 speaker p/chnl so all see 110W rms. The 4 in-boats are gonna shine @ 110W and the Icons will purr like a kitten. If you really want to wake them up, the HT-2 will deliver 165W to each Icon and the in-boats will stay at 110W each on the HT-4

Well, looks like I've come to a decision. Different than what I was thinking, but that's good.

                Tower setup: Icon8's with HT-2
Sub: SS10b - Dual 2 ohm, right? I'll just make my box to the specs.
Amp for sub and inboats: HT-4 - 2 channel for the sub, 2 Channel for in boats
                WS 420 - 3 zone controller.
I'm thinking I should limit the power to the inboats since I have the XS-65's. They only handle 60 RMS anyways.

As a follow up question. As lems asked: Will 110W rms be too much for the in-boats that are rated at 60W rms? I know less then nothing about this topic, but am in the same situation as far as upgrading stereo!

No, 110W will not be too much for a 6.5" in-boat with a 60W rms rating. With proper tuning, it will not over power them. With 2-3 pairs in the boat, it will be plenty loud, so the gains can be set very conservatively.

                      Gotcha! Txs!

Another beginner question. In that case, could I run all 4 inboard 6.5 'and' two 100W tower speakers with a 4 channel 100W rms x 4 amp? Then put a HT-AS10 in the port side locker to achieve a really nice "in boat, and surf range" sound?

Yes, we routinely drive 6 speakers with a 4 chnl amp.

Does anyone know what models of WetSounds you get with a "premium pro" sound system in the r20? Not sure what amp and sub it includes.

To the best of my knowledge, its still the Syn-6 that is installed from the factory to power the 6 xs-650 in-boats and ws-10fa sub

                              Thoughts:

                              Currently have:
                              - Clarion CMD6: 21W RMS X 4
                              - (4) inboard WS XS65: 60W RMS each

                              Considering adding:
                              - (1) Rockford Fosgate M400-4D amp: 75W RMS X 4 (to power the 4 existing inboard speakers)

                              - (2) Rockford Fosgate M282B: 8" Coax, tower speakers, 100W RMS each (maybe adding another 2 of these to total 4 tower speakers)
                              - (1) Rockford Fosgate M600-4D amp: 100W RMS X 4 to power the 2 (or maybe 4) tower speakers.

                              - (1) WS HT AS-10 sub: 500W internal amp subwoofer. (This would be the luxury item if the other 6-8 speakers don't satisfy me!)

My goal is to provide very clean, quality, sound in the boat and for surfing. Any thoughts?

                              Thanking you in advance!
