    Sub placement for 2012 RZR

I'm upgrading the basic stereo in our 2012 RZR and just got a Wetsounds XS-10FA. My plan was to install it under the helm like I see in many Tige boats, but it looks like it will be a tight fit.

The depth of this area looks to be exactly the depth of the sub and the back of the sub may be touching the back wall of this area.

Before I cut out the hole, I want to make sure this will work and get any opinions on this.

Does anyone have a RZR/R20 with this sub in this area from the factory that can tell me if its up against the back wall, or if Tige did anything different?

    Thanks
    Marc

TJ aka Houston Shark has a WS XXX under his helm. He did have to do some cutting but he made it work. I believe the 10 FA only needs like a .6-1cu ft box so you should EASILY be able to fit one under there.

I think he's just wanting to cut a hole and mount the sub to be a free air with out taking out the panel behind it? I could be wrong tho

If depth ends up being a problem you could build and install a matching-carpet-clad birch elevation ring on the outside and behind the woofer. You could even get a bit creative by using a matching vinyl wrap.
If you can place and push your heel against that surface with leverage and feel any degree of give then that panel should be reinforced.
A true 10-inch Infinite Baffle (IB/free-air) woofer needs 2.0 cu.ft. to infinite displacement. Anything less than 2.0 will raise the woofer's 'Q'.
An IB woofer needs total front to rear acoustic isolation, especially in near proximity.
Manage those issues and it should sound pretty darn good.

I was reading some old forums and someone had mentioned that this place may be perforated for the sub already.

I looked and it is, did a little cutting in the carpet and re measured and looks to be enough depth.

I will finish cutting it out soon.

          Thanks for the help.

Are you saying when you pulled the panel the it was already marked for the hole? I am installing the WS 10FA(same as factory) and was going to have the dealer pull the panel from a stock boat with a sub and mark/cut it for me using the other one as a template. But if its already pre marked I will do it myself.

it was on the Ve/RZ boats, as well as a 22i and 20v I did. If the RZR is like other Tige models, thats a wall thats part of the deck cap and not a panel that comes out.

I left the panel up, I think it's part of the helm and not made to come off. Reaching into the backside of the panel I could feel the cutout.

Little poking around and was able to feel the perforation through the carpet. From there, I cut the carpet circle out and was able to cut out the remaining sections and the opening was done.

Took less then 5 minutes and the sub was installed!

Do it yourself, it's really easy and 90% already cut. If you need pictures, let me know and I can take them tomorrow.

Do yourself a favor and port it through to the bow of the boat. You'll get much better performance out of the Sub. The space behind it is too shallow it doesn't allow for enough air flow.

I plan on throwing in the 10fa underneath the helm of the R20 too. I have the same cutout available. Could I essentially take a 3inch hole saw and cut through the fiberglass to port it into the bow? Is this big enough?

As noted above by David, that IB sub is going to need a larger cavity in order to perform at its best. I do not know if Dreamtige is actually talking about a wall thats behind the sub thats too close to the magnet, when he says "too shallow", or, is he describing an enclosed cavity thats too small. If its an enclosed cavity thats too small for an IB, then cutting a small hole might create what we call port noise. You may get a hoot or a woosh out of the sub due to the small diameter of the hole. If the cavity is indeed too small, it needs to be opened. If its that there is a wall thats too close to the magnet once the sub is installed, then yes, it needs to be opened up. I think anything less then an inch clearance on that sub is too close.

Just to confirm, are you guys saying that there is a perforated section of the wall that is designed for an easy cut and 10" sub install? I have an R20 and would like to install a sub under the helm.

Sorry, one more question. I have a Rockford 10" sub and the manufacturer states two different box sizes. One vented and one not vented. For an under the helm application (or in locker for that matter) would I want a vented box or unvented?

Yup, I'll try and take some pictures today if it stops raining. I ended up buying the 10fa. Should be here Monday.
