    EQ

I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THE NVX XEQ7 IS SIMILAR TO THE WS-420 MINUS THE MIC.WOULD I BE ABLE TO USE THE FADER AS A VOLUME CONTROL FOR EITHER TOWER OR INBOATS?ORJUST FADE BETWEEN THE TWO?SONIC HAS IT CHEAP FOR HELM VOLUME CONTROL.

yes. That looks like a pretty nice piece.

The other difference is that the sub crossover point is fixed, whereas it's adjustable on the ws420 (and some other EQs)

Buy it and let us know how it works!

The WS-420 has true dual zone volume control. You can turn the tower and in-boat zone up and down as you see fit. The subwoofer zone is a sub zone of the in-boat volume. The WS-420 allows for separate equalization of the in-boat and tower zone, where as most "car" units have a single equalizer that tunes both the front and rear chnls. On a boat application, this would be the in-boat and tower zones.

The WS-420 also offer 5V pre-out voltage on all chnls. Many others have a total or max voltage that is divided across all chnls. So in the end, this may not be any greater then a typical head-units pre-amp output.

The SW-420, although not waterproof, is built for the marine environment.

"Fade" is not true volume control, but works perfect for quite a few boat owners. It will allow you to bring down the volume of either the in-boat or tower zone, while the other remains at the level of the head-unit or master volume if the EQ offers it.

Some EQs will have a bass-boost, and not a true sub volume control. I have not read deep into the NVS unit, so I do not know for sure which it is.

What is it that you are after when looking into an EQ like the NVX?

THE BIGGEST THING IS HAVING VOLUME CONTROL AND 3.5MM INPUT NEXT TO ME.HEAD UNIT IS IN GLOVE BOX SO VOLUME IS HARD TO GET TO.I RAN A 3.5MM CORD FROM STEREO TO HELM FOR TEMPORARY MP3 WITH VOLUME CONTROL UNTIL I GET MORE FUNDS.JUST WAS HOPING TO NOT BE SO JIMMY RIGGED IF I GOT A EQ FOR50 BUCKS IT WOULD MAKE IT EASIER TO TURN THE VOLUME DOWN.MY WALLET AND I LEARNED THE HARD WAY.SHOULD HAVE JUST ORDERED IT ALL FROM YOU.LESSON LEARNED.THERES ANOTHER EQ FOR 35 BUCKS( A CADENCE EQ.)AND WITH COUPON CODE NVX EQ IS 41.88.SEEMS CHEAP FOR VOLUME CONTROL FOR NOW

Be careful when using a car stereo EQ in a boat.
Non-strain-relieved RCA connectors on the rear chassis, openings in the top of the chassis, exposed wafers on the front panel pots and so on are all failures waiting to happen.
Also, I would not want a fixed (even with two selections) lowpass crossover that I could not defeat. These type EQs are using leftover platforms from the early 90's when many amplifiers did not have self-contained crossovers. Today it's just useless redundancy consuming front panel real estate.
Most car stereo EQs are using only two stereo OP amps with a front panel passive fade after the fullrange output. The Wetsounds has six discrete outputs.
The Wetsounds has conformal coating, chassis-mounted RCAs (versus board mounted only), six discrete outputs, mic/PA system, dual zone EQs, a paragraphic bass EQ, sealed top, sealed cast front panel pot housings, a protected front panel switch and much more for the added expense.

EQ / Volume / Zone Question!

I will soon have my 4 inboards, 4 tower speakers, and 1 sub (under the helm). I am guessing that it will be convenient, but also necessary, to be able to adjust volume separately for each zone (tower vs inboard vs sub).

Do I need the super cool (yet seemingly expensive) ws420sq to have the ability to adjust all of these speakers and zones? Is there another 'marine grade' device that will do the same? I talked to a local stereo guy and he said that each 'zone' could be run by an attenuator (spelling?). He described 3 small knobs that would adjust the inboards, tower, and sub volume seperately. Does this sound correct?

                  Any help would be appreciated.

yeah three PAC LC-1s would work great for that. The nice thing about an EQ is it's also usually a line driver so you get a voltage bump to the amps, and if you don't have a deck with the three discrete outputs (F, R, Sub), the EQ can turn a single full range output into those three outputs for your amps.

What amps do you have? You could go with the kicker zxmrlc and get that option too.

                        Riley,

As doggy noted, 3 RCA level control POT's (potentiometers) such as the PAC (brand) LC-1 will work as volume controls, but the lack of a line level/line-driver is a down side. The other down side is that they require long RCA cable runs when the head-unit, amps and POTs are mounted on opposite sides of the boat. Each POT requires an RCA from the head-unit and the 2nd going out to the amp its going to control. This can easily be 20-30 feet in RCA's per zone.

If all you are after is zone control, then take a look at the Kicker ZXM-RLC Dual-Zone controller. Its a 9V per chnl line driver and uses a data cable from the control knobs to the control module so the control module can be located next to the amps. This keeps the RCA cables short. The control knobs can also be removed from their housings and panel mounted for a clean integrated look. The ZXM-RLC will give you 2 zones. If a 3rd is needed, then a second ZXM-RLC can be used, but in most cases, a line level can be connected to most manufactures mono amps, so theres your 3rd zone for the sub.
