ported or sealed sub under helm????

I just put a rockford fosgate M210s4b marine sub and put it under the helm ion a free air compartment in my 04' 21i. It's not very loud and just picked up a brand new rockford 12" P3 2 ohm dvc sub. I'm wanting to build a box out of 3/4 mdf and fiberglass and carpet it. Would it be better to go with a sealed or ported box. I'm going for spl but still want the sq pretty good. I got a 500 watt rms slash series jl mono block to push it which should b perfect. I'm wanting to build the box this weekend and get it put in. Any input on the box, and tuning specs would b much appreciated! Thanks a lot, hope to post pics of the build and the install!!!

For SPL you go ported. For sq you go sealed. I have a JL audio 12w6 in a sealed box running it with a JL audio xd600.1 amp. It sounds amazing, and it's LOUD!

You are going to get different opinions on this topic. I just have always used the rule of thumb that ported is for SPL and sealed is for SQ. Just my

I have a ported enclosure under my helm. Last oat we had we did sealed under the helm. I'd go ported all the way. I have an RE Audio SX 12 in a 2 cu ft ported enclosure tuned to 33hz being pushed by a Rockford punch 1000.1 and it just absolutely hammers!

I definately will go with a ported box than because I want it to pound. Will i have to cut out the front piece where the speaker mounts to now, slide my new box in, than build and carpet a new trim piece to clean it up? Is there some old threads on how to do the install. Thanks for the input

Ported definitely I run a 15 inch FI audio sub in a 4.5 cubic foot box at 2500 watts, tuned to 33 HZ, it makes the water bubble and if your sitting in the captains chair, the air coming out of the port wil blow right up your shorts or skirt, which ever you are wearing, it's an added bonus.

Here's some pictures of my box build for my under helm sub upgrade. I'm going with the Rockford P3 for now but may pull a w6 out of my truck to throw in it. I will get some pics of the install but probably won't b til next week cause I will b on the lake all weekend I'm planning on upgrading the tower to a pair of rev 10s and the junk clarion in boat speakers to xs-650s or kicker km6500. Never heard the wet sounds but definately wnt to spend the money right the first time so I'm not re upgrading like I'm doin the tower. Any suggestions on the in boats would b great. The problem I'm running into is that there is tweeter holes next to the speakers is there something I could do with them to still run the speakers I'm wanting?

Looking good so far. If you have not already planned to, I would suggest coating the inside of the box, same as the outside. The humid environment in a boat will be soaked up by the raw MDF and the box will soften in season or two. Also, you will need to raise the box off the floor of the boat so to allow for draining and drying under the box. This cuts down on mold/mildew and smell.

As discussed previously, the Kicker KM6250.2 components have the remote tweeter, so they will be nearly a direct replacement for your current Clarion in-boats. The KM6250.2 is worth auditioning along with the Wet Sounds XS-650. Similar power handling and price range, both 6.5" continuous-cone mid-bass drivers and 1" tweeter.

I was wondering about the inside so I will fiberglass it tonight. Will the xs-650 be a direct replacement or is the rweeter permanent in the speaker?

xs-650 does not have a separate tweeter, it is mounted on the grill

Damn that's what I thought. Is there anything I could do with the hole? Or am I pretty limited? Was really wanting a wetsounds system!

Got the inside and the rest of the box fiberglassed last week. Had some trouble at the lake Friday night so had to take it in to get looked at, 2 week wait so I'm gonna try to get it back tomorrow til theyre actually gonna look at it. Got my rockford P3 dvc 2 ohm sub wired down to 1 ohm and put it n my truck today on my jl 1000.1 amp not even 1/4 the way up. It was pounding pretty good for a single sub! I will probably eventually get a w7 to throw in it and b done if I could come across one for a decent price but this should work for now. Hopefully if I get the boat back ill cut a hole under the helm and get the box set so I can start on the trim piece. Only problem now is that the heater is mounted to the back of the infinite baffle now. I'm hoping there's enough hose and room to just mount the heater to the back of this box. Here's a pic of the sub mounted.
