Help tuning Wet Sounds Icon 8 with Syn2 amp

Last night I installed a pair of Wet Sounds Icon 8's powered by a Syn2. HU is a Clarion CMD5. I was not overly impressed with the sound quality coming from the Icon's. I am wondering maybe I have something out of whack with the tuning of the amp or HU. The speakers seem to be lacking midbass.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

The ICON 8 have a TON. I mean TON of mid bass. So sounds like you have them crossed over too high. You should be setting the high pass on the amp around 60 to 80 HZ.

make sure the switch for input is on stereo. make sure the freq range button is OUT on X1. (if it is X10 that means it is multiplying the freq by 10. so if set on 80HZ and X10, you are at 800HZ.) So make sure it is X1, whihc means times 1 so set at 80Hz is 80Hz. Turn the crossover all the way down to the left whihc is 55 HZ. then tune it from there. the slot should not be pointed any farther than at the R in FREQ. That is 80 HZ. Bass boost will be off as you wont need any when running these. Then set the gain.

Make sure the head unit is flat. No boost on bass or treble. Set head unit volume at about 85% of max volume and then slowly turn the gain up till you hear it distort. Then back down until they are playing loud and clean.

1st, start with the head-unit's EQ flat...no bass and no extra treble.

Was the Syn-2 new to the install or was it already installed and driving something else? If already was in use, I would probably back off the gain just a little if it was driving some HLCD's.

I have not had the chance yet to get a set and demo them myself, but here is where i would start:

Filter = Hi-Pass
Frequency = 80 - 100 Hz

Give that a try.

Thanks Tim! I will try this tonight. I think I have the crossover on full and turned all the way up. And of course I have the bass turned down on the HU and treble is a +3.. Gain I did turned to about half.

Slight hijack - Tim or Mike.... how would a pair Icon 8s work with a pair of 80s? Or is the MB-8 a better match for those? Is the Icon 8 meant to be stand alone? Or partner with the new Rev8s?

Or maybe I should just unload my 60s/80s/485s and get a new 3-some.

Just curious.

Super B I apologize for highjacking your thread. Tim and Mike I am aslo doing a tower upgrade with 4 rev 8's powered by a syn 2. I also added a syn 6 to power 6 in boats and the 10in factory sub. Is what you discribed above the same approach I should take for initial set up?

the ICON 8 although they are a non HLCD. Are a true tower speaker. They have a lot of output. And a lot of mid bass. I personally dont like mixing HLCD and non HLCD but there are some that are OK with it. When having two types, they need different power and settings. So if you do, would need their own amp channels to really tune them seperate or you wind up gaining down the HLCD to the level of the non HLCD. The ICON 8 is a speaker system stand alone designed for near field and wake surfing although it has more output than a 6.5 inch speaker at 80 feet back so still works for wake range.

If you are thinking about adding something to the tower for more mid bass for surfing, the MB-8 is a great add on for that.

gwhite, yes you can follow the same set up for your REV 8. Try them at about 60 to 80 hz and tune from there
