    tower speaker/amp questions

    hey guys,
I came accross a pair of pro 80s and a 485 that I can't pass up. They are not exactly what I want/need but like I stated the price was right. I am buying from someone who sold his boat and over the weekend and wants to dump them. I do have to buy clamps because they went with the boat.

So to my questions. What amp should I buy to run them? I don't want to spend a ton of money on an amp and also the clamps. I would not have spent the money on these speakers. Currently I have a kicker amp running 6 in-boat component speakers and a cheap amp and cheap sub to be upgraded at a later time. Also, I am not sure if I will have all the speakers on the tower or not. I am concerend about weight and space issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's a tough setup to power from a single amp. An Arc Audio KS600.2 would allow you to run the pro80s in parallel on one channel for 300w per can, and the 485 on the other channel for 400w. You can run that amp mono, which is what I'd do. That's probably the most economical way to do it right.

I would advise against running a stereo amp with one chnl at 2 ohm (a pair of 4 ohm speakers wired in parallel) and the other chnl at 4 ohm as the Pro485 is a 4 ohm pod.

      Syn-6
      Syn-4
      Syn-4 and Syn-2 combo
      Kicker IX500.4/IX500.2 combo
Kicker ZX650.4 or 850.4 if you can come across one.
      Arc-900.6
      Arc 300.4
      Arc 300.4/300.2 combo
      A pair of JL HD750/1

      Just to name a few.

Thanks chpthril. I will research those. Do you sell all of them?

Mike I've never done it but have always assumed (and there's an as* in every assumption) that running a two channel unbalanced really isn't much different than running a four channel amp in three channel mode with one side bridged and the other in stereo, for instance. Am I wrong?

Any reason not to do a single 750/1, if you wired the pro80s in series?

Isn't a syn4/ks300.4 going to be really weak to the pro 80s?

A zed leviathan would kill on that setup too, but it ain't cheap.

Most 4 chnls amps are really two 2 chnls in one housing. So on most, you can run one half at 4 ohm x 2 and the other half bridged with a 4 ohm sub. IIRC, one from Sony, can run 2 Ohm x 4, but it can not be bridged on both halves. JL has one that needs to either run at 4 ohm x 4 or 2 ohm x 4. Im sure Phil, David or Tim could get more technical, but I dont think it can be done with a typical stereo amp

A series/parallel configuration never divides the power evenly, even with 3 same type drivers. Im not sure how it would sound with a pair of 4 ohm HLCDs series and then wired in parallel with a dual-speaker/horn pod thats 4 ohm. You would have no way to balance the sound/output between the two if the power division was noticeable.

Its a matter of expectation and goals. Although the Pro80 will handle far more then the 125W from a Syn4, it does still power them nicely. They are still loud and plenty clear. And 400 for the 485 is spot on. Ive run this setup on my sound board.

The syn 4 and syn 2 combo gets my vote!
