    Fed up with wetsounds xxx

Last summer I redone my stereo in my boat with all wet sounds. In July I put in one XXX in hydrotunes box and Syn1 to power it. Labor day weekend (sept) the sub burnt tinsel wire in two. I thought, okay well things happen and didn't think much of it. So I sent it in for warranty Sept' 11. I just received it back last week. Feb' 12. 5 months was a long time, but it was winter so I didn't really worry about it. This winter I am redoing a few things in my boat and decided to do two XXX with syn1's. So the new XXX I purchased has also burnt one tinsel wire in two. So im to the point to just get rid of the XXX's I have and go a different route. Has anyone has any trouble with there XXX? If Im doing something wrong please tell me. Both subs were installed in a hydrotunes box with a syn1. I don't have the gain or bass boost turned way up either.

I have always been a big wet sounds fan, but I just haven't had any luck with there subs. I even have wet sounds in my Can Am side-by-side.

So does anyone have any suggestions for different subs to look at?

JL 12 w3 or w6. They pound and are reliable.

What size wire gauges are you using to feed the sub and what size power/ground wires for the amp? What are your gain settings? What head unit?

KnuKoncepts 8 gauge feeding the sub.
        KnuKoncepts 4 gauge powe3r/ground
        Gain set approx 1/4-1/2 up.
        Head unit is Clarion CMD4

That sounds like it should be good to go then. Was just making sure you had proper size wire. What number are you turning that CMD4 up to? What kind of source? iPod/CD?

I'm the kind of person that likes to know what happened, I like to know know the "Why". Simply changing brands may not solve the issue. I would contact the pros at Wet sounds and talk with them. Figure out the root cause, fix it, then you can safely decide if you want to go another brand route.

So each XXX has its own Syn-1? Did the new XXX go on the new Syn-1 or the original Syn-1.

Where are the BASS-BOOST, Subsonic and X-over set at? Also the Phase?

              wyatt,

where are you located at? Did you do the install or one of our dealers? A couple of things can be the cause. The SYN-1 has the ability to produce a LOT of power. Over 1600 watts. The 1000 watts is under rated. So depending on the set up and the gains. You could simply be over powering the XXX. Also, as mike pointed out. Did you use the subsonic filter. If using a ported box, that filter needs to be on and set at the tuning freq. Also, the crossover freq and phase. Bass boost?

Please email me at twhite@wetsounds.com and I will get with Gyver in tech support about your stuff as well. I do apolgize for the delay. we have been out of XXX for a while and getting the parts in has been tough. Normal turn around is super quick with us but the XXX was one of those out of the norm type deals.

I've always had great luck with all WS product and Customer Service from Tim, Gyver and the rest of the crew at WS. My XXX is powered by a Syn 1 and it "pounds" in it's sealed enclosure that I built using the specs found in the Owner's Manual. Hopefully you find out the root cause, I know you will not be dissapointed, can't imagine having 2 of them!

                    Wyatt,
I didn't sell the gear so I don't have a horse in this race. But I can tell you anything you want to know about speaker construction in nano detail. Here are a few bits of info you may or may not find useful.
The tinsel leads were burnt because of the heat that was transferred directly up the wire from the voice coil. A tinsel lead has to be made flexible out of smaller woven strands to handle the 2-inch peak to peak excursions. It can be made to handle more heat at the cost of reduced flexibilty and/or heavier mass. Then it wouldn't burn. It would just eventually break. Because the voice coil is so robust it didn't fail and the heat works its way down to the weakest link. If it wasn't the tinsel lead it would have been the glue joint of the voice coil former to cone or perhaps the enamel coating around the voice coil windings would have melted or possibly the voice coil wire would have burnt, etc. etc.
In any case it was done by an excess of something. Power makes heat. 95 percent of the power that goes into a woofer must be dissipated as heat. As the woofer voice coil is over-driven and as it is heated it may double its resistance or more. So now you have less output. Now you raise the volume and create even more heat. Its a nasty cycle.
Can they make a woofer handle twice as much power? In the real world probably not other than creating deceptive specs. Can they improve the power handling? Sure. But it will come at the cost of sound quality, sensitivity or in some other area of performance. In fact any extreme focus on a single discipline will come at the cost of some other performance parameter.
Like Mike's comment, I would also want to know exactly why the woofer failed so I don't take the problem forward to the next woofer whether that is a Wetsounds or alternate brand.
