JL Audio 8.8-inch Premium Marine Coaxial System

Anyone seen this yet? I know they are bigger than most people would ever want to put into their boat simply because if you don't like them, it's hard to find a speaker to replace them with BUT...I bet they sound awesome. My buddy has 14 of the 7.7"'s and they sound awesome. I have yet to hear a boat with Wetsounds that even comes close to the overall sound quality of his boat (not bashing WS btw, they sound amazing too). Just wondering if they have too much bass for in-boat speakers. They look huge though, would take up a lot of space especially with 5" of mounting depth.
Miramar, FL — Many were puzzled when JL Audio introduced their 7.7-inch marine speakers a few years ago. However, as soon as people heard them, they quickly realized that quite simply, a bigger speaker delivers better efficiency and bass extension at high output levels, leading to louder, cleaner output.
Following that logic, JL Audio's engineers set out to create an even more powerful marine coaxial. The result is this 8.8-inch diameter monster, which offers a significant performance advantage over the previous 7.7-inch models, and a huge advantage over conventional 6.5 inch marine coaxials (twice the cone area will do that for you).

The bass is so impressive that the M880-CCX can be used without a subwoofer while still packing a serious low-frequency punch. When used with a subwoofer, they offer vastly better dynamics and mid-bass impact than smaller speakers.

IMO, you are going to be hard pressed to find a spot in the average boat to mount an 8" speaker and especially one with a 5" mounting depth. JL makes some of the best sounding full-range speakers, especially the 7.7, but you end up locked into that size forever if you are the 2nd owner of one that came OEM with them. Same with the new Rockford 8" that come std in the MXZ. Thats a heck of a hole to fill if you ever wanted to change.

Too much bass.....no such thing No really, you could cross these over down to about 50Hz and have a seamless transition from from the sub to the smaller 6.5" coax.

I don't know if these would fit in an RZ2 in the factory holes in the main cabin or not and then it would cut into the ballast space Would like to hear them in someone's boat though. I think my buddy is going to try and figure out how to get them into his Epic when they are released.

Mike is right in that its not going to be an easy task to retro these 880s into most towboats. There will be far more applications for off-shore and go-fast boats. But if you can manage them and you can ensure that they are properly mounted and acoustically isolated front to rear then they will be amazing as a stand alone speaker or integrated with a very powerful subwoofer system. The ultimate bass pitch accuracy and resolution is very dependent on the midbass of the coaxials. This would make for incredible bass SQ.

I plan on massaging my RZR a bit once it comes in to try and get these to fit in the 4 main cabin speaker locations. I'm sure they won't fit in the bow. Do the 7.7" fit in the factory bow speaker locations? Im sure the holes need to be opened up a bit.

I think these are the best sounding in boat speakers made. I wish they made a nicer looking tower speaker/grill. My boat will come with the Rev10's on the tower which I plan on keeping. I haven't heard the Rev10 yet but I thought the Pro80's sounded good, or at least loud as a tower speaker, although a little too bright IMO.

I have the JL 7.7" in my cooler stereo I built to float the river with. I originally designed it to include a 7.7" component woofer on the back for better bass but it really didn't add that much so I pulled it out to save weight and did a backlit frosted plex piece with the JL grill mounted to it to mimic a speaker.
