Part Help! - Tige does not make anymore.

I recently purchased the Clarion CMD6 to replace my Clarion XMD1 in my 2002 Tige 2300V. The insert that held the XMD1 is cracked and looks pretty bad, so I wanted to replace the insert before I installed the CMD6, preferably with a hole cut to match the new one. Tige no longer makes this insert and I really want to avoid going to a fiberglass guy to get this made... any help at all to get this part would be greatly appreciated.. check out the part that I need in this picture.

I have gotten one quote, I think the guy was crazy but it was going to be over $500. Does anyone have any experience with this? How much do you think it should cost?

Do you listen to CD's, AM/FM or SAT? If the answer is no, then sell the CMD6, close the glovebox door and dont look back. other wise, you're looking at having a fab shop make a custom/1-off insert.

Good luck and let us know what you do find. Sad part is, its only about $2 worth of plastic material there, buts its the mold and process thats gonna cost.

depressing...... I will primarily use it for the iPod interface. Hopefully I can find someone to do it for around $100.

I'm confused, so your telling him not to utilize a head unit? What's the other method to use to play ipod/iphone without using a head unit?

I think Kicker is coming out, if it not already, with some sort of setup to allow this.

Can you find something that fits behind and covers the hole. Who cares what shape it is so long da it covers the whole from the back. Wrap the edge in rubber, mount the latch catch and boom, glove box.

Yes, you no longer need a head unit. Kicker has one out (or coming out) and I think you can use a WS-420 as well. You just need a line driver with an aux input. Mike will explain it better than me.

In all actuality, you can go straight to the amp(s) with just a 3.5mm to RCA cable right from an MP3 player. The sound quality is poor due to the low level of from the headphone jack, but it work fine.

So many people these days only use an MP3 or other storage device for thier tunes. Many do not listen to AM/FM, CD's or even SAT radio. For them, and traditional head-unit is not needed. The MP3 becomes the source unit.

What is needed, for clean stable music, is a device that will boost the low voltage signal from an MP3 before it gets to the amp. This is called a line driver. These come on the form of Equalizers (such as the Wet Sounds WS-420, Kicker KQ5 and others) or a zone controller like the Kicker ZXM-RLC. These devices will take the signal and boost it and split it off to 2 or more outputs for multiple amps. Kicker's new PXi50.2 is designed for those Ipod users who do not need the functions of a traditional head-unit. It will drive 1-2 pair of speakers as well as has outputs for amps and will also accept a remote control.

I would take that one out and take it to a body shop. have them use the 3m bumper repair kit on this. a good body guy could fill the hole so you can recut for your new head unit and also fix all the crack areas on the edges....make sure you don't overtighten when putting it back in, thats why it cracked in first place. Est cost is probably $30 or so for the kit and a 2-3 hours of labor. You could also trick it up and have it painted to match boat color if you wanted to.

How good are you at working with things? It's possible to do this yourself if you are handy at all, fiberglass isn't super hard to work with. Do some research and I believe that you can wrap your old one in aluminum foil or plastic and then lay your new glass over the old one using it as a mold and then sand/fill/paint and you will be good to go.

I have never actually done fiberglass work, but if my next quote is not more reasonable I might try to. The problem is that the plastic part is very fragile with many cracks so if I try to do it myself I'm afraid I will break this insert and won't have another shot at using it as a mold.

yllw20: are you assuming that what I have now is fiberglass? This is a very flemsy piece of plastic so I'm not sure if I could repair it and even if I could I think it will look horrible.

I like the thought of using an equalizer since I only use my iPod for music anyway, but I was looking forward to having a nice head unit with the MW1 remote next to the steering wheel just because I thought it would look clean and potentially adding another MW1 by the transom down the road.

no, not assuming yours is fiberglass. the 3m repair is used on car bumpers which is plastic. basically you can use a patch for holes and then the 2 part resin for the crack area you would sand down and fill with the resin then sand back to shape. you can find tutorials on you tube. that stuff is actually stronger than the bumper plastic itself and should help.
                            - it is something most body shops do or should use that is why i suggested to go to a body shop...the labor should also be cheaper than a fiberglass shop.

You could also potentially wrap the backside with fiberglass and then use the 3m repair as yllw20 suggests on the side that you see.
