Mounting AMPs in rear locker?

Instead of mounting my amp rack under the passenger storage area(on either the exterior or interior sidewall) as is typically seen...I am considering mounting it in the port rear storage locker. I would do this to cut down on the cost of 1/0 amp install cables, to maintain as much storage under the passenger area as possible, and so i dont have to crawl my *** under that small area, working in the rear i have much more room. I also do not plan on adding ballast.

The only downside i see to this is now I would be running 8 or so speaker wire pairs plus a sub wire along the side of the boat up to the stereo connections, and rca patch cables back to the amps from the head unit...but i figure this is still the cheaper route to go?

Any opinions, or has anyone done this?

Another downside would be if you ever want to add ballast.

Go for it then. I cannot see think of any other reason that you couldn't. Unless it could possibly be a safety issue with gasoline fumes back there.

I would be concerned about water and moisture . The passenger storage in my boat stays dry where the rear lockers always seem to get some water dripping in from above. I went 0 gauge from batteries to distribution block in the front storage then 4 gauge to the amps, this also kept the RCA runs short as I have heard long runs can cause noise issues.

hot amp,gas fumes and moisture sound like bad enviroment, i mounted a on board charger in the back and no moisture problems yet but alaways open compartment doors and clear out fumes prior to plugging in

Just reading the thread title and I could tell you this is a bad idea.. like you said.. the speake wires would all need to be routed back there but I would think that would be one of the last of you worries... Plus it gets very hot bck there.. especially in comparison to the front storage locker..

My boat brings in so much water in the rear storage lockers, through the vent back there...

My entire engine was wet from the belt flingin' water everywhere. I might have a few more issues with water as I'm weighting my boat for surfing, but it makes me cringe to think of installing amps back there...

Agreed... think about a fan that comes on when the amp does. Also, the fan would need to be mounted far enough away that it didnt cause a whining noise in the amp.
