Just to throw 2 uneducated cents into the ring...
I've have been extremely happy with my little sealed enclosure. My under helm access is really tight. I don't have the luxury of accessing the inside of the helm from the back of the bow seating. I had to fit my enclosure in through the little access door in the walkway. The box design was critical in this sense as it had to fit in the walkway and get through the door and be big enough for the sub. I was just barely able to squeeze a 1 cu. ft. box (recommended min. internal vol.) through there. Being a custom cabinet designer, I was able to build and install virtually before ever making cut one so, I knew it would work but, it was tight. I lucked out there. It houses a 10" RE, re series sub, running off a RF Punch...P200.4 (I think) bridged. Forgive me, it's been in there for 5 or 6 years now. Given my size limitations and limited audio system knowledge, it has been fantastic. It hits way harder than I need if I turn it up (it's currently set very low) and it sounds great with all the odd ball types of music I listen to. Does it sound like a studio, no but, it's a boat. I just need it to sound good, have relatively low power draw and be sturdy and reliable. It is all of that and I think I spent maybe $250 on the whole thing, sub, amp and box. Of coarse my materials were free for the box given my employment but, if you are really on a budget you can get a 4 x 8 sheet of 3/4 heavy duty MDF from most lumber yards for free or at least nearly free. Lumber companies use them for bottom sheets for sheet goods (plywood, melamine, what not) units. They might be a little ugly or broken in some spots but, most of a sheet will be more than enough for a box.
