Speaker Advice

Old Polk audio in-boat speakers are done. I need some new replacements. I'm definitely looking at WetSounds, based on some of the other posts. But here is my question: Over the last couple of years, because my fatsacs lean up against the vinyl next to the speakers, the vinyl has pulled out from behind the speaker and it looks like crap. Now I try to keep at least a little room between the sacs and the vinyl, but I need to try to make it look nice again.

Anyone have any thoughts? My first thought was to put a bigger speaker there, but I don't think anything bigger than a 6.5" will work. As soon as it stops raining here (if it ever does ) I'll snap a pic and post it.

Anyone had this issue before?

JL makes 7.7 inch interior speakers marine interior speakers.

Kicker has some good selections in the 6.5" size. Maybe something with an oversize front bezel will cover the vinyl that has pulled out. How about stapling the vinyl to the backer board before putting the speakers in.

But, when you put this many bags on against your speaker, things are going to happen...

Its not sitting like that because of the fat sacs, its because of your fat a$$ sitting on the side of the boat

I would 1st look into preventing the vinyl from pulling out v's trying to find a larger speaker. The JL 7.7 would be the next size up though.

Installing a spacer ring between the speaker and the seat back. This will do two things: 1) gives you something to glue and staple the vinyl to before the speaker is installed. 2) the ring keeps the speaker from compressing the foam to a point of stretching the vinyl.

Composite material line UHMPE or epoxy-coated wood. Some times the ring will need to be cut into a pair of half moons to fit in.

With would the the same as the speakers mouting flange, OD - ID = width. Thickness would depend on what it took to get the job done, but not as thick as the foam at rest, you will want some compression.

Is this a home-made thing or a buy it somewhere thing? Not sure what UHMPE is.

Yep, found em. you're right. About $5. Now, all I need is a pair of them Wet Sounds! Anyone have a good dealer they would recommend?
