    Wet Sounds Cabin Speaker Issue

I was out today and noticed that when I turned up the volume it sounds like all of the speakers cabin are blown. I thought it was the IPod and switched to the radio - same thing. The tower speakers sound fine and to make it even more bizarre I have no amps on the boat at all; just the head unit.

Does this sound like a head unit issue or perhaps the winter did something to the speakers? Everything sounds fine at mid to low level, but anything past that the speakers seem to make a popping sound. Sounds like something is hitting the cone versus an electric driven pop. I have the standard Clarion head unit and Wet Sounds 6.5 in cabin x 4.

    Any help appreciated.

You claim you have tower speakers but no amp at all? That doesnt seem right, because its highly unlikely that the Clarion head unit would be driving any tower speaker...

What tower speakers do you have? Have you looked under the passenger storage area and seen any amplifiers wired up? If you really do have tower speakers, then you almost certainly have an amp in the circuit, and somewhere a setting has got out of whack on the amp which is causing distortion in the cabin speakers....

Tower Speakers are Samson 720's - there are two units under the cabin. One of those is the Sirius unit and the other is where the remotes / iPod plug in. It is my understanding this unit had 50x 4 watts - perhaps the unit in the cabin where all the remotes/iPod is where the power for the head unit is located?? All has worked well up until now.

The head unit powers the cabin speakers typically wired up from the factory, yes probably 50w x 4....HOWEVER, It's highly unlikely that the tower speakers are being driven off this head unit, it would be way underpowered and cause a bigtime load imbalance to the ehad unit, causing crappy performance and possibly even causing it to fail or blow fuses.

Who installed the tower speakers? How many tower speakers are there? Look up underneath the head unit and see if you see any wires running into the back of it that appear "different" inc olor and size from the rest of the speaker wires (these are probably the tower speaker wires). Let's hope that someone didn't wire the tower speakers into the head unit!

also, do all 4 of your cabin speakers have sound coming from them?

What you are hearing out of the cabin speakers is more then likely whats 'clipping' and is an anticipated occurance when speakers are not given suffuciant power i.e. driven off a head unit. The headunit will be lucky to deliver 18W of power to a speakear that will be happy when receiving around 75 - 100 watts.

At a minimum, get a Wet Sounds Syn Mycro and even better, get the Syn4. The Syn4 would allow you to add a sub or a 3rd pair of XS-650's later if you wanted.

Now, i hope to god the installer didnt wire the tower speakers to the head-unit also So, I hope some where in that boat there is an amp driving them.
