    Kicker ZXM-RLC Dual zone

Q1. Just wondering where the best place to mount the controls?

Q2. Are the volume controls waterproof?

Q3. Why is one control plug in line so short and the other is super long??

    Thanks

Mount them under the dash or somewhere that is easily accessible. The subwoofer volume control that I have (which is the same knob as these) is mounted under the dash directly under the steering wheel.

Q1 - These need to be at your fingertips.

Q2 - I will say yes, but dont hold me to it, so ask the guy that built them

Q3 - Dont know why, but I would love to see both cables the same as the current long one.

How would I get the controls from port side console to drivers side?

You can either run them around the bow (under the interior) or if you have a fresh air vent that runs from under the helm to the port side storage, you can run the wires inside that vent. Kicker makes a longer cable set if you need it.

I have one vent on the port side going through the floor....but not sure if it stops there or goes somewhere else.

One cable is 6.5' and the other is 16.5'. Running the cables around the front bow certainly would be alot easier I think.

            Thanks

I just opened up mine and it's the same way. I have to wonder what the thinking was there. Would people really mount them in 2 different places? I have one that must be a 2 Meter cable and the other looks to be about 5 Meters

Look in the storage compartment under the bow seat on the starboard side in front of the helm and see if there is a vent tube that goes into the floor there. On my boat, I can just fish the wires through that vent.

I wonder if standard phone wire would work?

Further research indicates that it may be a 6P6C-25 voice cable(phone) based on the option to add a longer cable on Earmark Car Audio's website:

Maybe check the local home improvement store and see if they have something that matches up. My phone cords look to be 4 strand cables.

Yes, a std phone/RJ cable will work if a longer cable is needed.

Pass the cables down the bilge vent hole on the port side and bring them up though the steering cable hole on the starboard side.

I guess just use a piece of coart type wire long enough to reach.

When the ZXM-RLC was put to paper, we needed to address a number of different applications. The dual length remote cables are a result of study that showed many applications would truly be zoned, i.e. one control in one zone area and the other in another zoned area. Think about a cabin cruiser where dad at the helm wants the music blaring while mom down below, (man, I am being very '50's stereotypical! ) making sandwiches would want to have the music control nearby, and at a lower volume. The radio in may boats will often be mounted close to one of the remote controls, hence the short cable.

We know too that people would occasioanlly have needs of mounting the remotes at a distance farther than what was provided for in the ZXM-RLC. We could have packed two 40ft cables with each unit, but that would have unnecessarily burdened the cost of the device making it more expensive than it needed to be for many installations. Instead we opted to use a commonly available cable so that if you needed longer, you could get it easily at any number of local stores, inclusing Radio Shack, Lowes, Home Depot, or even WalMart. The sockets are 6-conductor RJ-style sockets, but we only use 4 conductors. As a result, any 4-conductor phone cable will work, and you can buy those real cheaply at any of the outlets mentioned above.

Hopefully that makes things make more sense.

I know for some installations it seems wrong, but we really tried to think of everybody who would use the device and make the best decision based on economics.
