iPod adapter not charging Nano or iPhone

The iPod adapter cable on my stock Clarion system will not charge a Nano or iPhone when connected. It has been awhile since I have used an iPod but I recall it charged that device.

Anyone have success in getting sound and charge through the iPod connector?

Mine gives a message that the cable does not support charging, I just use my car kit and the RCA cable.

Did you upgrade the Nano and iPhone since you last used it?

No I just assumed that it would not charge it. Does yours charge then?

There is an adaptor for charging the new Ipod devices with those cables meant for the early Gen's. They moved the pin location the power and/or ground. Do a search, there was some info posted on this not too long ago. I think by Moneypity.

My only reccomendation is make sure the Nano is fastened down ( I velcro mine to side of amp) and that the input cable to the Schosche unit is zip tied so it does not pull on adapter.

                Enjoy

                      ^^^
The proposed solution in the above thread (to relocate the small red remote turn-on wire to an LED rocker switch) solves several problems for me.

First, I also get the iPod reset problem.

Second, it annoys the heck out of me when the music cuts out every time I switch the motor off picking up or putting in a rider.

Of course, then I need to make sure to turn off the switch when done ...

                        Not Reccomended

You can change how the Red Power Lead to the H/U is wired from a switched connection from the ignition to a permanent hot lead if the Perko Battery Switch is ON. This way as long as their is power to a hot point on the breaker panel the stereo system is hot by bypassing the ignition turn on of the H/U power

Downside is it will force you to open the Perko switch when done for the day or possibly a breaker that is always hot.

You would move the Red Power Lead to the Head Untit to a hot lead at the breaker panel when the ignition is off and Perko is on. Make sure this connection goes cold when Perko switch is off.

The issue is not the ipod but how the Head Unit and Amps are wired in to have them turn on only if ignition or ACC. is on. You will need to move power to the H/U so it isn't switched This way the stereo h/u and amps are always hot and even if you turn off ignition they are still on. The only way then to completely power off all stereo components is by killing main power by shutting off your Perko Switch.

Would I do this for the little bit of inconvenience to switch ignition switch to aux when stopping. Heck no. You will forget and leave the head unit and amps on and find dead battery somewhere down the road.

No so. Just to clarify, my recommendation is to move the head-unit's switched remote turn-on from the key switch to a rocker switch NOT a constant hot source. This rocker switch will do the same as the key switch, turn on and off the head-unit. The difference is that you will only need to turn the rocker on when you hope in the boat, and turn it off when you are done. No more cycling the stereo every time you shut off the engine. The chances of this switch being left on, is no greater then leaving on NAV light, blower, bilge, etc. That's why I suggest using an unused ACC rocker already on the helm. Chances are, it has a light in actuator, which gives you a visual indicator that the stereo is still on. Of course, if you are snapping on the cover and singing along to your favorite song, there's a good chance you forgot something

Dealer suggested, and I concurred on, connecting memory wire and switched power together behind head unit so that the stereo turns on/off from stereo and remote pads.

The driver remote is lit so I should be able to tell whether on or off no different than a toggle switch.

Some of the concern is minimized given the boat is on a slip lift and the onboard tender is always plugged in.

Stay tuned for the inevitable followup post: "So, I forgot to turn off the radio ...."

EDIT: I presume the WS420 and the amps are likewise connected to come on/off.

At first glance, my feeling is this. With the H/U's red remote and Mem yellow on a constant hot, the H/U's power button acts more like a mute command, rather then a turn off command. I need to test this, but do not have a Clarion on hand to see. This may, just may, leave the amps and WS-420 powered up. Hmmm.
