    Rockford Fosgate head unit issues

First off we have a switch that turns the power to the stereo on and off. We have a Rockford Fosgate RFX9220M head unit and we are having an issue that when we turn the swith on the deck will illuminate but nothing will power up. The amps do not turn on, the fans do not turn on, there are no numbers (clock) on the screen of the headunit and when we hit the power button on the stereo nothing happens.

The kicker is this, if I play with it enough and unplug the harness from the back of the unit it will reset its self sometimesand start to work, sometimes the stereo will work for a while and sometimes not even a full song.

I am thinking either the head unit is going out. Or its a low voltage issue. We have 3 optima blue tops powering the boat, but I put a new battery in the boat for yesterdays trip and hooked up to of the + wires for the main switch to one battery and the stereo was connected directly to the new battery and the new battery wasnt hooked to the alternator. The stereo worked great for a few hours but then stopped workin. then I hooked up the battery and got the stereo workin again but it was short lived.

just wondering if anyone has ever experienced anything like this.

well i tried playing with it today and when I switch the switch on and the amps cycle 2 times and dont stay on. I am assuming the head unit is going bad... pluss the batteries are putting out 12.9 volts each. should we stick with the RF unit so i dont have to rewire the entire stereo? or is there a better unit for around $2-$300.

We have the stereo hooked to an 800W RF amp and 2 500W RF amps 3 boston pro speakers on the tower and four mb quartz speakers in the boat and a 12" sub.

Take your volt meter and go right to the back of the head-unit. Just because the batteries show proper voltage @ the source, there could be a poor connection causing low voltage at the head-unit.

Find the yellow power/memory and black ground wires and check for voltage across them. Next, check for voltage on the small red wire when the key is on or in ACC.

ok i checked the voltage at the batteries after a fresh charge. We are rockin 3 optima blue tops. we just replaced one of them.

the voltage at each battery and every terminal on the battery switch and it reads 13 volts across the board. however on my perfect pass it only reads 11.3 volts.

over the winter i replaced the wire from the starter to the battery switch i used a smaller gauge wire from autozone (no boat shops in Tucson, AZ) but this checks at 13 volts at the switch.

i noticed a cable that had a loose feeling crimp on the eyelet i will try to crimp it down tomorrow and check connections at the ignition and stereo switch

Ok so I took some voltage readings. at the back of the head unit I am getting 8.4 volts followed that wire back and about every 3-4 feet the voltage raised, at the front gunwale side of the starboard side locker the voltage was 9.7 volts then at the switch right next to the steering wheel the voltage was 12.4 volts for the output wire and on the 12v input the voltage was 12.7 volts. would a bad switch cause this much power loss over a span of ~30'? or do i have an issue with the wire its self? I squeezed the connection at the switch tomake sure it was tight.

FYI I am getting 12.7 volts at the accesory yellow wire on the head unit.

If you have 12.7 going into the switch and 12.4 leaving, but only 8.4 getting to the head-unit, I'd say it's either a back connection on either end or the wire is cut/broken some along the way. Snip the ends off and strip some insulation back. The freshly exposed wire should be clean and shiny. If it's dull and/or corroded, then there is the problem. You will have to cut it back till you get to good wire.

that probably means that the wire at the switch is failing because the voltage drop is instant.

just an update... the problem was a bad switch. jumped the 12v out (to stereo) wit the constant 12v on other side of switch. and everything worked.
