    485 Hissing

I just installed my new sound system (thanks to CHP!) and this is what I put in:

1 Syn4 to run in boat wetsounds
1 Syn4 to run tower 485 with room for sub later
    485 Tower speaker
    420 EQ

I followed the instructions in the Amp manual for the settings on the amp. I also followed the instructions in the 420 manual to tune the system. The thing is, with the 485 bridged on one of the Syn4's, the gain is turned all the way up and the 485 never distorts. It is loud enough for me without a doubt, but when it is turned down via the 420, there is a pretty loud hiss coming from the speaker. I assume this is because the gain is turned all the way up on the amp, but that is where it needs to be in order to clearly hear music while boarding at 75' out. Am I missing something here?

You have what is called gain hiss. It can happen from the gains being up too high or not set at the unity setting. Also, type of wire can get noise on the line and the system. As well as settings.

For instance, if you have the treble up on the head unit or boosted on an mp3 player or boosted on the 420. You can hear hiss when no music is playing.

Best thing to do is make sure that everything has solid grounds. The WS-420 and radio are sharing the same grounds as the amps. The RCA's are good quaility. Make sure deck is flat and any mp3 player is set flat

Then tune with the 420 flat as well and re tune the gains. Your system may need a bit more volume from the deck and the 420 so there is less gain etc...the info on setting up the system I wrote is a good base line but each system is different so will need to be tweaked.

You should be able to get plenty of volume without the hiss. But since boats do not have a true ground. Sometimes there is just noise in the system that will always be there.

Hope this helps and post up some pics. Thanks for rocking Wet Sounds
