04 22i audio upgrade

    04 22i audio upgrade

    I just bought an 04 tige 22i and am looking to upgrade the system. The boat is currently in storage, but I know it has a deh6400bt HU and 4 set of maybe 6" and separate tweeter. No amp. Looking to do the inside first then add tower speakers later. Sadly, I'm am on a bit of a budget so I can't go out and get a bunch of wet audio gear. Is there a spot to add a sub? Should I add some speakers in the middle? Currently only has rear and now. Appreciate any advice.

    Under the helm is the perfect spot for a woofer. I would suggest adding an amp that would drive the existing in-boats and the woofer. A 5 chnl amp would do this AND allow for a 3rd pair of in-boats to be added later.

        95% of my builds consist of speakers, woofers and amps from Wet Sounds and Kicker because I trust the build quality and the performance is reliable.

          Hey Brian, I have the 05 22i and have been slowly upgrading the audio system. Obviously, CHPTHRIL is one of the experts on here on what equipment to use but it can often be expensive. Personally, I scour Facebook Marketplace looking for marine audio or audio from the RZR side by sides where people are upgrading. There is always a risk with buying used equipment but I haven't been burned yet. Still approaching $700 with a sub, amp, tower enclosures, wire, but that could be the price of one good amp. Anyway, I put the sub under the helm in the compartment accessible from the walkway. I chose kicker speakers for the enclosures and a JL Audio 10" for the sub. Running the sub with a memphis audio amp and the towers with a clarion amp. Definitely not a high end system but affordable for me. Good luck!

            Brian, if you want to save some coin, I would consider skipping spending money on the in boats in the cabin and start with tower speakers. I have 1 pair of rev10s powered with 300W each and I don’t even hear the 4 cabin in boats over the rev10s. Mike will know better, but I’d guess the kicker tower speakers are probably super loud like the rev10s too....


            I would still put an amp on the bow speakers though.....

              Appreciate the response. I would love rev 10s, I just dont have the cash for them this year. That was going to be my winter project. But, if they make that big of a difference, 8" 300w kicker tower speakers are in my range. Just not sure if that would be the next best thing if I went that route.

                Chpthril should now how those kickers compare. I was just saying that if you did the towers first, you might find that you dint care about the inboats. You might get lucky and find some used ones for cheaper....

                  I actually compared the kicker HCLD to the WS REV. I ended up getting the 9” kicker Vs the Rev10. For the record I wasn’t super concerned about the cost difference, but the fact that the Kickers came with the tower clamps and were a little cheaper was nice. I went 9 vs 11 because the size of the speaker on the 11 just felt big and I already crush my head on them. Lol

                  I thought the Rev10s were too bright, in summary. The 9” and 11” kicker both had better mid bass at the same power. For me, 85% or my listening was floating in a cove, the rest is playing killer parry Gripp tunes for my kids while they are surfing. Frankly, they fit my listening style better

                  I did go WS revo 6.5” in the boat because I wanted to pump power to them and hear while under way. It worked

                  Net net - I don’t think you can go wrong.

                    As for the sub and amp, any recommendations? I think I have read that free air aren't the way to go. And as Mike said, I could power this with a 5 channel amp, but I cant seem to find the right one. The most I have done in the past is change plug and play speakers in my truck, so building with amps is new to me, but I have been spending hours researching and learning what I can.

                    I am completely open to build suggestions.

                    Tower speakers seem pretty straight forward...get some and run an amp matching rms wattage to them.

                        A free-air/infinite-baffle woofer of any given size, with the same wattage, is going to yield similar output as an acoustic suspension woofer in a sealed enclosure. Sadly, and no offence to anyone, many that criticize the mild wattage free-air 10", go on to tell you about how much harder their 24" 15,000 watt triple ported double secret probation box hits so much harder. This is apples to oranges that are not even in the same universe.

                        The secret to free-air is, the proper amp, the proper woofer, and the proper boat that can support an IB alignment. With that said, of your benchmark for a woofer is a larger, hi-output woofer in a ported enclosure, then a small fee-air with mild wattage, is not for you. But, there are some marine built hi-performance 12" IB woofers that will handle a solid 600W rms!.

                        So in closing, if you are up to building an enclosure and space allows, then go with a sealed or ported enclosure. For a more straight forward setup, a free-air woofer can yield good results.

                        The KM654L is a great speaker. As far as the 5 chnl (or any amp) id decide on the woofer first, this makes the amp, or amps, choice easier. I can help you on all of this.

                          In my previous boat(I/O, not surf boat) I had 4 Polk audio 6.5” on my tower that are very similar specs as the kickers your looking at. They had very good sound, but if you go with these I will contradict my earlier comment about not needing inboats. The inboats would definitely help fill in the sound inside the cabin.

                          I believe that there is a proper balance between sub power versus mids/high power. I’m trying to say if you have 4 300W speakers, a 300W sub doesn’t stand a chance of keeping up. But the same 300W sub will sound great when paired with 4 100W speakers. Everyone has a different preference for how much bass they like.

                          Mike, is there a rule of thumb that you go by? I only have experience with my 2 boats, but my gut says the tendency is somewhere near a 1:1 ratio. For every 1W of total speakers power you need 1W of sub power.....

                          My current sub is the 300W wetsounds 10” free air, and it keeps up with the 1 pair of rev10s when the sub is at max volume and the rev10s are at about 75%. When sub and rev10s are at max, the sub doesn’t quite keep up. But, I can’t stand the revs at max volume for very long as they are too bright for my ears too....

                          Will your towers speakers be below or above your Bimini. This can make a huge difference of sound volume/quality in the cabin.

                            Tower speakers will be above the bimini. That will likely be my winter project. But yes, I am hoping some good in boats will suffice for the time being, but with what you're saying, it sounds like one sub might not be enough at that point.

                            As for subs, I may have narrowed it down to a Wet Sounds FA, though I'm not exactly sure how I mount that. Do you just throw it in a hole in the wall under the helm with the magnet in the storage locker?

                            The other I have narrowed it down to is the Rockford Fosgate M1D2-12B. That I would put in a box under the helm.

                              Hey BC, I have the single LED version of those kickers mounted in the Kicker KM Tower enclosures (4 speakers total). They are plenty loud but don't handle louder volumes of bass well so a sub is recommended. I also have a zone control so I can adjust how much goes through them. Anyway, they have good sound for 6.5" speakers. If you go with them, I have a pair of the KM tower enclosures in white that I can sell for $100 plus shipping. You can PM me if you want them later.

                              I actually painted them Matte Black since this photo but it's so you see how they look on the tower. I will add that, with the Bimini up, I don't hear them that well from the drivers seat (unless I turn them up) because they are above the bimini.
