Medallion USB Harness

Help! Before I ask about the Medallion USB harness, I'm wondering why I keep getting a error message when I try to hook up my iphone/ipod to the USB port beside my Clarion CMD5 deck? As for the Medallion USB harness, what exactly is this for? It was in the glovebox of my RZ2 when I picked it up from the dealer.

It plugs into the blue box that runs the Tige Touch screen and is used for updating the software.
